8 should be more than enough, even for taxing games. Anything over it is a bit overkill, but if you want to future-proof your rig and have money to spare, you can opt for a 16 - 32 gb config.
What would require going above 8 gigs?
But if I do upgrade I might just go 12-16 gigs.
If you want to run a lot of taxing applications such as editing tools and 3D software or computing programs. Anything other than that, barely touches the 6 gb mark.

K I just didn't know what else pushes RAM.
I know my CPU has problems with FRAPS if I make the fps too high (+24) when recording.
Was curious if RAM could be limiting anything else.
RAM hasn't really been a bottleneck in a long while, since both size and speed are relatively high in modern standards. CPU bottlenecks on the otherhand are still a very common ground. Even top line OC'ed CPUs can have bottlenecks for certain games/applications.
I've yet to have CPU problems with games. Tho I guess the most recent game I have for my PC is just AC3, and even on max settings, that might not be much.
From the specs I've seen, ACIII doesn't demand that much from PCs. A Core 2 Quad and a GTX 260 are the optimal settings, so they're a bit low for modern day standards.
There are some games that are heavily CPU dependent, either because they're an unoptimized mess (in which every Crysis game falls into that category) or because it has a ton of physics calculations in which the CPU can't keep up with the GPU.
Actually now that I think of it I have Plantside 2 and it runs fine on full settings.
It's CPU dependent right?
Wow that low for AC3? Game looks beatiful in some areas.
Yeah, that's a game that can have some CPU bottlenecks, but those are mostly found on AMD processors because the game was optimized for Intel processors. Even if you have a i7-3770K or similar, if you don't shutdown background processes while running the game, you'll see a huge dent in your FPS whenever there's an area with a large number of combatants at the same time.
I don't know about ACIII, but Dead Space 3 looks damn gorgeous and my laptop runs it maxed at 40 FPS. It has to do with optimization and smoke and mirrors to fac-simile some shaders through clever use of lightning and blur to get some type of DoF and SSAO, even though the game has none.
