Almost two-thirds of gamers have trolled other players online, with most of those doing it for 'amusement or entertainment'.

The statistic comes from Nottingham Trent University, which as carried out a study of trolling in online gaming.

The study found trolling - which is defined by the study as 'intentionally provoking or antagonising users in an online environment' - had been carried out at some point by 59.5% of gamers who took part in the study.

Those participated in trolling 'tended to be younger, male and play for longer sessions.'

The main reasons given for trolling were 'amusement or entertainment' (almost half of those taking part in the study) or boredom (a quarter). A fifth said that had no reason for trolling.

The study also found that 47% of participants had either frequently, very frequently or always witnessed trolling in the last year.

Have you trolled online or been a victim of it recently? Do you think it's a serious problem for online gaming? If so, how do you think it can be solved?

I can think of a lot of things that are more fun than trolling.

We all complain about this problem. Ain't no one got anything to say!?

so, that makes like one third liars?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

lol maybe!

But you have to wonder, two thirds are the one's who admit doing it. The real number must be much higher :S

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

I like to troll my buddies when playing co-op offline, such as in Portal 2 =P

Trolling online... I don't know, if I at least could see the people's faces, well, probably...

My thoughts as well.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

What else would one do online?

Hmm, I don't see the entertainment in trolling. Anyone can annoy someone by being stupid and rude, challenging someone by writing well reasoned posts and arguments is a lot more engaging and won't get you enemies, only people who disagree (politely disagree, more often than not).

There are quite a few members in here who troll almost all the time, I don't understand the value of joining a website only to annoy and vex the other members. Luckily, these trolls get reported and banned when its called for, but there are a couple that I really don't understand why they're allowed to stay at all.
