Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

What if it was like SMG but SMBB?

your on a sphere with 4 dudes running around, with a set camera view, trying to beat each other up and knock each other off the planet.

Im sure you could do something with that if you took the time for it...

I am WEEzY. You can suck my Nintendo loving BALLS!

The only way I can see how it could be fun is if there are a whole bunch of AoE spells with different effects... =p

Could it be done, yes. Should it be done, I'm leaning towards no. Part of what makes Smash Smash is the platformer elements and while single player platformers have done well enough in the transition to 3d, multiplayer ones have not.

I think Powerstone is about as close to Smash you can get with 3d gameplay.

That's like making Street Fighter 3D or something...ridiculous. And even then, like Rol said, 1v1 "standard" fighters can have some "3D" motion like sidestepping because you're still looking at the characters from a fixed angle. Throw in 2 more players and that's pretty much impossible. Not to mention Tekken and such are still pretty much 2D fighters...

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

an 3d smash bros would be horrible.

What about Tekken or Virtua Fighter? They seem to work pretty well. But I agree, Smash Bros. should stay 2-D

One on one fighting games work in 3D because the characters adjust the direction they look in quickly, the only exception are sidesteps, but that's a tactical maneuver.

Four players fighting each other in 3D is much more complicated to pull off and the solutions I have experienced so far in wrestling games aren't really satisfying. On top of that SSB is much faster paced than the rather slow wrestling games, things would only get worse.

SSB works so well because it's a 2D fighting game and it should remain that way. I doubt that any SSB fan would want to play it in 3D.

I was going to reply something similar, but few guys beat me first. Tekken and Virtua Fighter are actually 2D fighters while sidestep gives a little more depth into the gameplay. It would be whole different matter if you could freely choose which way you're facing and move freely in the stage. The latter actually makes Smash Bros. feel more 3D than Tekken or VF. Just like Rol said, the wrestling games haven't been satisfying, but they are the closest thing to 3D fighters so far. But i don't completely agree about SSB not working in 3D, since it's one of the fighters that could successfully pull the 3D transition off. It definately would affect gameplay, making it harder and therefore lose some of its appeal.

i dont think a true, good 3d fighter will emerge from a fighter. it will emerge from an action game. think of dmc3 but multiplayer and a lot of adjustments:

its like a fighting game, but in 3d and no player to beat on. trust me, dmc3 has so many quirks in the engine its ridiculous.
