What about Tekken or Virtua Fighter? They seem to work pretty well. But I agree, Smash Bros. should stay 2-D

One on one fighting games work in 3D because the characters adjust the direction they look in quickly, the only exception are sidesteps, but that's a tactical maneuver.

Four players fighting each other in 3D is much more complicated to pull off and the solutions I have experienced so far in wrestling games aren't really satisfying. On top of that SSB is much faster paced than the rather slow wrestling games, things would only get worse.

SSB works so well because it's a 2D fighting game and it should remain that way. I doubt that any SSB fan would want to play it in 3D.

I was going to reply something similar, but few guys beat me first. Tekken and Virtua Fighter are actually 2D fighters while sidestep gives a little more depth into the gameplay. It would be whole different matter if you could freely choose which way you're facing and move freely in the stage. The latter actually makes Smash Bros. feel more 3D than Tekken or VF. Just like Rol said, the wrestling games haven't been satisfying, but they are the closest thing to 3D fighters so far. But i don't completely agree about SSB not working in 3D, since it's one of the fighters that could successfully pull the 3D transition off. It definately would affect gameplay, making it harder and therefore lose some of its appeal.
