Forums - Nintendo - Surgeons who play Nintendo Wii outperformed peers, study shows

They should have used Trauma center, after playing that im confident i could perform a triple heart bypass.

How was the game?  I see that it is published by Atlus which usually puts out good games.  I never played it but was always curious.

So playing the Wii makes you a better surgeon than actually performing surgeries. Sounds legit!

Helped the post grad residents preform better in the simulator than others that didn't play Wii.

Seth- I bought it my sister for a Christmas gift a few years ago, and its actually quite good. Thats the sort of game the Wiimote was created for, the game itself is quite tricky but very rewarding..think a virtual version of operation, but in a good way.

I think it sounds a lot like the people who claim that playing shooters makes you better with real life weapons in real life situations. You actually move the Wii-mote around, granted, but the simple waggle motion or racketing, paddling etc in Wii Sports can't possibly have any impact on fine motor precision and pinpoint accuracy with surgical equipment. It just sounds ridiculous.

That is the stupidest thing I've ever read.

Why?  Because it makes surgeons preform better?

Because it's horrible science!

They took a random group that had no experience doing the procedure and had them try the simulator. Next they gave half of them a Wii. Do you know what that Wii taught them? To be slow! They are simply taking their time verse the control group.

They are also still horrible at it!

A but in good way...  Not sure if that is possible.  I still have nightmares of hitting the sides on Operation.

Apparently, the Wii teaches patience which improves the overall score.  The control group was going a lot faster but their scores are far worse.  Sure there are times you have to be very quick being a surgeon but it is probably best that most surgeries happen at a smooth steady pace.

I've always believed people that aren't any good at playing on the Wii are less coordinated or lazy... This article sums it up...

"enhances spatial attention and eye-hand coordination"

A stereotype with gamers is they are less coordinated and less athletic in real life. (Not all gamers but most). This is a reason more core gamers should embrace the Wii and not dismiss it.

Now only if the Wii U can release games with such appeal.

lol so you believe there is some correlation between how fit someone is and the video games they play?
