Did Ninja Theory shoot themselves in the foot?

Argh, DmC shipped 1.85m. Where are you getting numbers from?

Besides, Devil May Cry series had 4 games before DmC, 2 of the 4 "old" dante were horrible games (2nd and 4th). CAPCOM is the one responsible for the declined popularity,NOT Ninja Theory.

HS was a generic sub average game, it only sold what it sold because it probably looked good and PS3 had no gamez.

I realize this isn't a direct response to your question but w/e.

EDIT:

I made a mistake:

"Capcom shipped 1 million units of DmC: Devil May Cry on Xbox 360 and PS3 in January. The company adjusted its sales forecasts for the game to 1.2 million by March 31, down from the 2 million projected back in May 2012."

But yeah, I insist, it's capcom fault, play DMC4 and you will know why.

Enslaved was a decent game, rough around the edges and incredibly repetetive but decent.

They are a good developer, but instead of trying to antagonise Devil May cry fans, they should've tried to please them. The problem is they set out to make the game they felt like doing, not exactly the game the market and fans want.
Having defied the fanbase openly was a huge mistake.

With that said, their games arent huge sucesses but they are enough to turn a profit and they are a darling studio of western critics and do make decent games. They seem to be working on the PS4 already. Maybe they are making Heavinly Sword 2. They certainly learned alot with the 2 titles they have worked on since heavinly. I'm sure each game is even better than the last. They are good, but they need to lose the defiant atitude.

I thought Enslaved was a very fun game. If given the budget NT could make a truely awesome game. I haven't played DMC yet, since I'm not a fan of that type of game. But if they make another action adventure game like Enslaved, sign me up.

I think the changes to DMC were just what Capcom wanted. They thought the formula was becoming stale so they outsourced it to a western company to refresh the series.

Did dmc really sell that bad?

Didn't Sony have to bring in SSM to help finish Heavenly Sword, and Capcom helped with the development of DmC?  Between the quality and the sales of all their titles it seems like if anything Sony dodged a bullet by not continuing the relationship.

But instead, Ninja Theory went on record to say they barely broke even with Heavenly Sword, and would be going multiplatform. How is that working out?

I bet a lot of that 1.5 million came from bundles, also they made no money on Heavenly Sword: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/240867/ninja-theory-we-made-no-money-on-ps3-with-heavenly-sword/

Broke even = made no money

yeah. It was mentioned in the OP

In that CVG interview they say this

_____________________________

"It's difficult. Heavenly Sword came out pretty early on the PS3, and we sold, I think, a million and a half copies, and that's still not enough as an independent studio to break even," said co-founder Tameem Antoniades.

"The publisher potentially breaks even at that point, but the developers don't," he added, and it's for this reason that the developer chose to go multi-platform with its latest upcoming quest, Enslaved.

_____________________________

Heavenly Sword didn't manage to break even and there is no reason to believe a second or third game would have changed that, so if they continued with Heavenly Sword they were certainly going to have to majorly downsize (in order to cost cut costs) or go bankrupt in the name of being stubborn. However discontent with the idea of dying they decided to do the smart thing, whether or not that has payed off is a different matter, because the chance of living, of continuing, is better than guranteeing your downfall.

There were bundles?
