Forums - Gaming - Is the graphic leap to 8th gen as noticeable as previous leaps?

6th-7th vs 7th-8th, how do they compare?

It's a much bigger leap 45 7.17%

It's a somewhat bigger leap 47 7.48%

It's a similar leap 119 18.95%

It's a somewhat smaller leap 202 32.17%

It's a much smaller leap 214 34.08%

Total:627

Small jump if someone play most games on consoles, considering I play mostly on PC and these games look like PC games it's not a jump at all.

“To me Wii U is to PS4 what PS2 was to Gamecube.”

My response … No way man. It is definitely larger than that. :D But I’ll let the games speak in the next gen. Watch Dogs will be the first test since it is the first multiplatform game between the Wii U and PS4. We will revisit this issue over the next few months. I will book this page and message you.

To me it is, I just don't see a big difference between X and Killzone. Yea games like Wonderful 101 are meh, but Wii U's best seem as good as PS4 to me.

You care about realism? In all types of games? Are you big on FPS's and Racing games then? See I'm mostly an RPG fan, and except in Western RPG's where there is a lot of shooting mechanisms, there is no realism in RPG's. Especially JRPG's, you can't jump 30 feet and not break a foot, LOL. So for me it's mostly about ability to show beauty. Graphics can make games look more beautiful, but it's not always the case. XenoBlade was one of the best looking games for me next gen, and I know graphically it's nowhere nearly as good looking as FFXIII, but it looks a lot more inspired, and a lot more interesting then FFXIII.

Still good graphics are nice, I loved Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, and FallOut.

Wii U - wow, that surprised me. I never read a hardcore comparision by digital foundry, but in graphical comparision videos I always felt the WiiU version looked the best. Guess Wii U isn't strong enough to play enhanced ports of PS3/360 games.

Either way, we won't see how powerful the Wii U is until the more powerful exclusives or MP games made specifically for Wii U release. I wonder if Watch Dogs looks better on WiiU then PS3/360.

Yes I care about realism, but realism doesn’t have one visage. It comes in a multitude of varieties. All of the qualities I listed don’t necessarily have to be found in one game. In fact some of them can’t be implemented in some games. For instance, realistic physics is not required in an arcade racer. But the extra processing power and RAM will definitely help make the experience more enjoyable. Emotion and believable facial expressions would be pointless here, no? But it would be great for Jrpgs and other games with characters. Some of those qualities I think should be in EVERY game. Better AI is always welcomed and with better hardware we could see that.

I personally don’t like shooters very much. I’ve limited myself to Killzone and Resistance because I’m indifferent about the genre. I may give Battlefield 4 a try later in the year on PS4. But I digress. Be it JRPG, shooter or racer the extra hardware power goes a long way.

Oh I see, you make a good arguement.

Well, did you say you were planning on getting both a Wii U and PS4 anyway? I can't remember. If so you'll be able to see the difference between WiiU and PS4 exclusives first hand.

As for me, I'm not huge on realism or graphics, unless it's a racing sim. However I do care about how well a game flows, how fun the gameplay is, and the story, and that has more to do with the abilities of the developers. None of this stuff are limited by RAM or bus rates, at least not anymore. Take Ocarina of Time for instance, yes the 3DS version looks better, but I don't care. Nintendo nailed the gameplay in the game and that game has set the groundwork for all future Zelda's. The games are rarely glitchy, when you jump and make a ledge, the N64 was capable of detecting it well, and overall it was a well developed game.

Now move to the PS3/360, and we still see games which just don't flow well. A perfect example would be The Last Remnant for 360. There are severe drops in the frame rate, the game doesn't always recognize input commands, and in general the game was not developed well for the 360's limitations.

So anyway were getting off topic now, I still don't see a big difference in Wii U and PS4 graphics, but you do. However we can both agree that the difference is less then that of Wii to PS3.

With that said I'm looking forward to X, the next gen Tales of, and maybe a couple surprises like Valkyria Chronicles. I'm sure both Wii U and PS4 will have great looking and great quality JRPGs (and other genres too), and I don't think too many people will complain that the Wii U isn't as powerful as the PS4/NextBox.

If it is an indication of something, Battlefield 3 on PC (dx11 max settings) looks better than the showcased Killzone PS4. And it was released for a while now. Same case for many DX11 enabled games like Crysis and Project Cars.

"Next Gen" consoles are just catching up with the PC standards of today. Look at Unreal Engine 4 PC vs PS4 and go figure.

"oh but deep down from capcom looks so next gen" - yeah sure, and the latest 3DMark on my desktop looks even better, but those are showcase tech demos not actual games.

But the graphics for any new gen console including Wii U, ps4 and xbox will look great. Uncharted 3 and the Last of Us already looks stunning for my standards. I wouldn't be surprised to see many games being release for this new gen that look worse than Uncharted and last of Us. Graphics come at a cost you people know that.

Heck, even tablets for 2014 will have stunningly pretty games.

The graphics war is over, no one can use that as the selling point anymore, Vita and Wii assure you that.

From Wii to Wii U, the jump is bigger then last gen. Wii games look slightly better then Gamecube Games, and Wii U games, so far, comparable to PS4 games.

Read your whole post but that completely ruins everything else you have to say. Nothing on Wii U is even comparable to Knack.

Yeah right. Knack looks like the Wonderful 101. Or Project P-100. Whatever it's called. Don't be biased.

KNACK looks like CGI, and W101 looks like a first gen PS3 game.

As a PC gamer, they look the same. Awful.
