no it wouldnt, MS can lose much more then sony can

except they won't, microsoft won't go in the red for 3 generations in a row

So you say MS is not making profit with 360 this gen? Interesting... Any proof?

I'm sure stock holders would love to know that after the company has shrank, Sony wants to again, take a 200 dollar loss on every console... Good thing you're not in charge of that.

How about you spend now until release, and actually save some money?

Everyday Sony fans on the Internet confirm me that they want Sony to die. $200 loss on each console would mean hundreds of millions in losses.

Read that last line in the OP.

He's got a point. People all over the internet believe that they can just say: Hey, lets price this thing like 500$ less than it costs us to make, because then it will sell well, and if a product sells well you must be making money from it!

Sure... but I'm not those people. This isn't actually what I'd go for, I'm just asking if it would be possible. If they could offset the losses.

Funny how people are getting annoyed at it.

Do the math:
100 USD * 5 mln units 1st year (or maybe 10)
Can sony afford more?

We would have had Kaz beheaded by stockholders animated gifs

8 mil units = 1.6 billion loss

Question is could they offset that.

Does anyone know what the average profit Sony make from game sales is? As in from a single game.

Given that the royalty-free PC version of a game usually costs between 5 or 10 € less than the console version, not enough to offset those losses. Of course, with 1st party titles it's different.

OT: If they do that they will prove that they have learned nothing from the PS3. They may sell a lot of consoles, but their financial situation will explode and give them a hell lot of problems.

But they aren't that stupid.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Instant bankruptcy.

Well they say Sony is it's own worst enemy.....so what you said is technically correct.

Chances of that happening,

Well 200$ loss would mean 1 billion loss on 5m consoles sold... would you want to lose 1 billion?
And they'd only get profitable MUCH later than at 5m - more like 20-30m maybe? So make that 5 billion loss. Straight suicide. So, no.

Looking at last generation and Wii U I think this gen it's really tough to launch a console. People won't pay a lot, so no manufacturer can go for super high tech. Lesson learned from 599,- PS3. Innovative peripheral raises the cost, so it's either fancy or high-tech. Lesson learned from Wii U. I expect this to result in conservative, moderate upgrades.
