Forums - Gaming - Here's a though about next gen consoles

With the sales of Wii-U being, well, not the best a console has ever had, does this open the arena for Sony to reclaim its "fall from grace."  Even though I don't think sony did any worse in terms of a sleak and powerful console with great games than they  did with their first two systems, but they did fall in terms of marketing.  Could Sony's new console (if there is one) come back and surpass the almighty PS2?

EDIT:  And if it can't beat the PS2, could it at least be the market leader for the next gen?

I don't know if anything will beat the success of the PS2 for a very very long time

I doubt it, not with three major players in the game. Microsoft is no Sega in terms of market impact. It's just a different dynamic. The 720 would have to fall off hard, which I don't see happening with all the money Microsoft can and will pour into advertising.

That being said, if they launch within a couple of months of the 720, I think the PS4 has a very good shot at being the market leader this coming gen. A lot of people are ceding next gen to Microsoft, but the truth is that the 360 was the slowest selling console of this gen by a substantial margin. They would have to do something very impressive to grow that much share at this point.

I think something like this is very possible;

PS4 > 120 million
Nextbox > 80 million
Wii U > 45 million

What we've learned is that price remains king. If the far cheaper PS360 remains on shelves, they will hinder next gen offerings. I'm sure M$ony's betting on those ps360 adopters of 4+ yrs ready to move on, but just like Wii U after a decent launch, sales will slow down. Teens like to think the market is all about them, but its parents w/kids 1st and foremost. Kid may want the 720/PS4, parent says "how bout this (cheaper) wii U" kid says "AWW MOMMM", parent says STFU, you can take or leave it. Mario it is.

as always wait for the games. This is another deja vu threat...how many more?

You guys have anything else to say?....

I really doubt it - there are big 3 players in the game, plus I expect 8th gen market to shrink compared to 7th gen. Honestly, I'd be surprised if anyone manages over 100mil.

If Sony can show that PS4 is a significant leap over PS3 in terms of games, multimedia, and connectivity, while launching at $399, they should be well on their way. With the much more mature state of SCEWWS compared to when PS3 launched I think software will be much better this time around. Last gen Sony was still trying to squeeze out PS2 titles, and 3rd parties had not made the swing to next gen development early enough for the same reasons.

This time around they will be ready to bring the big guns within the first year and a half like with PS2. I expect to see Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Final Fantasy, and other big franchise all by next holiday. Also they will not fall behind with 3rd party support like last gen. They should get all of the same games as the WiiU and XBOX3, and they should not have performance issues like PS3 did, if rumors are true.

If PS3 sales are any indicator of momentum, then Sony has the advantage in the home console market right now. If they can pick up from there, without the stumbles of the PS3's launch, then there should be good times ahead for PS4.
