Forums - Nintendo - 3DS or 3DS XL?

Which 3ds should I get?

The original 3ds 27 21.60%

3ds XL 87 69.60%

Wait for a newer 3ds to come out 11 8.80%

Total:125

I personally prefer the original 3DS. Design-wise it's much more beautiful, it's cheaper, it's more portable and the smaller screens provide higher PPI(sharper image). The only flaw it has compared to the 3DS XL is the lack of a screen filter to reduce reflectivity.

The original looks better imo

Not necessarily, according to a few people here. But I might just go for an XL simply because I already bought an original 3ds. I'm going to try some demos again before I make my final decision. If I get an XL though, I'm going to wait for newer colors to come out, which I hope is soon.

Understandable. I would really like that White Color that Japan has...

I got the original before the XL released. I dont find it enough to upgrade, but if they released an XXL with a second analog nub i would.

If you are older than 10 or taller than 5 feet then the 3DS XL is the only option. The regular is just so tiny.

Actually the newer 3DS games have a way much greater 3D effect, so if you are 6 feet tall and playing with the 3D ON & all the way up, then you should get the regular size one.

Fire Emblem & Crashmo & Dillon's Rolling Western & Luigi's Mansion & Sonic Racing transformed, just to name a very few out of so many.

And 3D is only good for our eyes & brain anyways:

Why would you want to do this?, really dude the 3D effect on the bigger screen on the XL makes the 3D in any game stand out and look sooo much better, so why would you want to limit yourself to such a small screen if giving the choice??.

Also take this from an owner who owned the original 3DS and once i seen the 3DS XL in action traded in my original for the XL right away.

First it feels soo much more better in the hands.

You dont get any more pixalated gfx then on the original 3DS (dont ask me how nintendo does this i have no clue but they do it, you look at a game on the 3DS and the 3DS XL and i can bet you wont notice it being any more pixalated or that)

The 3D looks like 100 times better on the 3D XL screen and the sweet spot for seeing the 3D is not as small on the 3DS XL as it is on the 3DS so you can kinda move it a bit more without losing the 3D effect.

In every sense of the word if your a gamer the 3DS XL is the most definate version of the 3DS and the one everyone should buy!, unless they are worried about pocket size the is no reason you should pick the original over the XL version.

The 3D effect acts like anti-alising and the XL has physical antialiasing which gets even more antialising from the 3D effect.

The XL does have it's 3D look better because the same 3D image is 90% bigger because the 3D screen is 90% bigger, which gives 90% more depth & distance, which is why the depth slider is 90% longer.

And if you read my other post you would see that I mention a similar thing where I talk about Pushmo & Cubic Ninja & Crimson Shroud.

Plus I'm the kind of person who wants to see everything at once.

If you looked at the games I mentioned on a regular size 3DS:

Fire Emblem & Crashmo & Dillon's Rolling Western & Luigi's Mansion & Sonic Racing transformed, just to name a very few out of so many.

With the 3D ON & all the way up, then you should know what I am talking about, plus the OP user is actually asking which to get, so I had to explain since he or she is not just going straight with the XL.

i wanted to get the XL so bad myself until I saw the newer 3DS games with the 3D ON & all the way up.

@TheKoreanGuy

I forgot to mention that the XL is 3% reflective VS. 12% reflective on the regular size, which makes the XL suitable for playing outdoors during the day time when the sun is out fully.

First of all i want to say to the bolded this is wrong. The 3DS XL uses no more AA then the original games intended or more then the original 3DS, You do know when it comes to AA in pretty much every case its the game that sets the AA level right??.

Also on the 3DS XL screen its not like its so big you cant see the whole screen, in fact you can!!, great news right??. .

You tried using 3 minor games as a reason to buy the 3DS XL over the original but yet you use all the big name games for a reason to get the original 3DS over the XL version, why do this when all them games look so much better on the XL screen?

Really the is no reason imo for anyone to buy the original version of the 3DS over the XL version as the XL version is better in everyway imo.

Well, the bigger titles have a way better 3D effect, and I don't like to hold my 3DS any further away to enjoy the bigger size. I agree the XL is better across the board, excluding pixel density: 22X vs. the XL 194, but the XL has a bigger screen so it doesn't end up looking any different in pixel density, even though the original has much higher.

Anyways I like to see everything at once, so in the theaters I sit further in the back for 3D movies to take in the entire scenery.

Well, the XL marks the last version of the Handheld until the New Gen in around 2020, because they have ran out of new iteration ideas.

If you are always going to play with the 3D ON and all the way up then get the Original 3DS, and it will make you love 3D no matter who you are, it will make you a believer:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

If you have ever had any problems with 3D on 3DS then Lower the Volume of 3D the first 1 to 2 weeks to needed levels, but after 1 to 2 weeks you will be able to play with it all the way up 24/7.

Anyways the newer 3DS games have a way more better 3D effect then ever before that makes the screen seem even more bigger then any previous 3DS games.

Plus the Firmware update will give you a realistic battery life.

You should also take advantage of the 6 speaker sound earphone jack, with Surround Sound headphones like "Plantronics Gamecom 777" ($30 to $80' depends where online you look), it's a 7.1 Surround Sound headphone with noise reduction and plugs into an earphone jack with a separate microphone jack plug I just leave unplugged.

I would only suggest the 3DS XL if you are playing in 2D like 2% of 3DS owners or if you are playing these 3 games in 3D:

Cubic Ninja

Pushmo

Crimson Shroud

FYI it's Speakerphones do Virtual Surround Sound. Also check out the 3D websites in my signature on the Web Browser when you get it, but the GBA site needs to be visited on your computer to download the rar files and extract 3D screenshots to put into the SD card once you have more then 100 photos/screenshots in your 3DS to have multiple folders in your DCIM folder to fit them all by 100 per folder (you will know what to do by then)

Thanks for the informative posts. What if I don't want to use 3D? I'd much rather save battery life.

For battery life, just do a firmware update which with 4.5.0-10U you will have at least 4 hours.

Plus before you put your unplug 3DS in sleep mode, you want to turn the 3D OFF & brightness all the way down & Power Save Mode ON & volume all the way down......this will give many more hours of sleep mode which helps playing with everything ON and all the way up when open.

Get the XL it's just much better The original feels more expensive But the XL's Huge screen competes with the Vitas Big screen.

Says the person who has never played Sonic Racing Transformed with the 3D ON and all the way up.

The bigger screen is NOT needed in 3D Movies & 3D games.

Only condensed flat 2D images need a big screen, like a 6 to 10 inch for handhelds & IMAX size for 2D movies in theaters & I guess 75 inch will do for 2D TVs.

For 3D Movies you just need 200 inch screen or so, and for 3D TVs well a 42 inch might do it, and for Handhelds 3.53 inch is enough for modern 3D games like Luigi's Mansion & Fire Emblem & Sonic Racing transformed & Crashmo & Dillon's Rolling Western & so fort.

The only thing keeping me from buying the XL is the EXTREME 3D effect in the new 3DS games, like Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, which I have already downloaded the 3D trailer from the eShop.
