PSX was the only abbreviation for the Playstation back when there was no PS2.

The PSX was not a console between the PS2 and 3, it was a DVR enabled PS2 released only in Japan. Everyone outside of Japan doesn't need to remember the PSX, it wasn't a world wide product.

There was no PS1, there was a PS and a PSone, but no PS1. PS-X was the internal development name for the PS and predated the PSone.

SCEA actually wanted to release the Playstation with the name PSX because they didn't like the name Playstation. I agree with them, to me it sounds like a Playschool toy for babies.

But anyway, we call it PSX because back in the 32bit days the vast majority called it PSX and the name stuck. Back then you either typed Playstation or PSX. All the magazines did it and so did those of us with dial up and a forum to post on.

Playstation is maybe the best console name ever(only rivaled by GameBoy). If Sony has done one thing right, it's to stick to that name. The Super Nintendo? The ... Mega Drive? The Atari 2600? The Xbox? The Nintendo 64? The Dreamcast? The Wii? The Wonderswan?

Consoles have dumb names, and the PlayStation name might not be cool, but it explains just what it is, contrary to those other names I just listed.

since people called computers in offices workstations they decided to play off  that and  call it  the Playstation .

If I had to guess I'd say it was much simpler than that.

Game =  Play

Console = Station

Game Console = Playstation

Sony couldn't get much more generic than Playstation. I mean I've always prefered the cool and unique names like Saturn, PC-Engine, Genesis, Neo Geo, Dreamcast, Colecovision, etc. But that's not my real issue with the name Playstation. It sounds like a toy for a 2 year old.

Back in 1994, before Sony entered the console race, if I told you the baby in the picture below was having fun with his new PlaySkool PlayStation, you would have thought that sounds about right. Sony did a great job turning it into a cool brand, but it just never sounded as good as the examples I gave above. Sony has been very consistant, I'll give them credit for that.

Why does it bug you so much?

Because it's no different than referring to the N64 as the GC. PSX = PS2+.

PS 1 = playstation one.

Still calling it PSX regardless of what anyone says.

Type in PSX on google images and you will see the original Playstation 1. (Although not disagreeing with the fact that you mention the pseudo PS1/PS2 system).

Why not call the Wii the Wii U, the PS2 the PS3 and the xbox the xbox 360? And for shits & giggles, let's call the SNES the N64.

PSX is not, never has been, and never will mean the original Playstation.

Also, let's call "left" right and "up" down.

Sorry OP but epic fail, PSX has been an accepted term for the original PlayStation since day one.

No it hasn't otherwise Sony wouldn't have released a console called PSX. Having owned the PS1 etc, I know that PSX has never been an original term for the Playstation 1 since release. The internal code was PS-X, but that's like everyone sticking to Orbis and Durango for the next gen of consoles.

If you are old enough, you will remember that the first PlayStation was commonly abbreviated as "PSX" in video game magazines before it retro-actively became the PS1 after the PS2 announcement.and PSone introduction.

Referring to a dev code (which actually had a hypen in it) seems entirely pretentious or highly misinformed.

Why do people call the Origional playstation the PSX......Type psx into google and see what comes up, It an actual console that was made inbetween the PS2 and PS3, it has the cross media bar to similar to the PS3, it was also sony's first console to have the cross media bar

it was released in Japan (and only in japan) in 2003 just before Christmas, its plays Playstation and Playstation 2 titles It has internal storage with  160GB HDD and a higher model with 250GB with memory stick reader (like the origional PS3 60GB) updatable firmware (like psp ps3)

So yeah, call it the Playstation, PS, PS1 PSOne........ but stop calling it the PSX Please.

Because it IS the PSX to everyone who had one before that little white model came out. It is what everyone referered to it as. That DVR thing is named after the common abbreviation of the original PSX. What can I say, I guess it's hard being a newb.

psx.ign.com - this site has been Round since the 90's.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Wasn't PSX the original code name for the CD player they were supposed to be helping Nintendo with way back?

The term PSX was used since "ever" and always referred to the first Playstation. I never saw discussions about PSX where a PS2 with extra-hardware was meant. I will still use it as I ever used it.
