Forums - Gaming - Sequels over new IP's

S.T.A.G.E brought something to my attention and how we always see so much excitement over sequels going into the next generation.  He says he knows what to expect coming from Sony but not Microsoft and that is cool and all but honestly we really don't know what to expect from either, but that is a different story.  Personally I am looking more forward to new IP's than sequels.  That is why I am anxiosly awaiting to see what studios like Black Tusk Studios and Media Molecule's new project are.  I mean i love my Halo games and Uncharted games but I look more forward to hearing about new IP's over the inivetable games i know I'll be getting.  So how does people feel about a ton of sequel games for launch?  Personally I find it to be a bad idea to launch a bunch of sequels because your launch period is also the best time to create a new successful franchise because people are more open minded to trying things when they first buy a piece of hardware. Sure release a squel or two at launch to help push hardware but dont only rely on them either.  Discuss

Honestly, it could go either way with new IPs or sequels.

Sequels offer a familiar face to those who don't want to risk on buying a new IP because they've never heard of it. If New Super Mario Bros. U wouldn't have come out for the WiiU, I probably would have waited until this year to purchase one.

On the other hand, showing off a beautiful new game can lead to people wanting the game. Look at Uncharted. After word of mouth of how beautiful the game was, it continued to sell until the series became the beast that it is today. Then again, you have cases where the new IP is kinda bad, and leads to negative publicity (looking at games like Lair and Haze that turned out to be more harmful for the PS3 than good).

I honestly feel that if a system launches with the right combination of the two, then it would have a successful launch. Although I can honestly say that relying on a game that is released on both current and next gen consoles is probably a bad idea because people are going to go with the console they already have instead of trying to upgrade. I don't only speak of the WiiU but also some games that were on the 360 & PS2 and what I assume will happen when God Eater 2 releases on the Vita and PSP.

completely agree.  Don't klnow if i could have said it better myself.

Wii had Wii Sports AND a hardcore Zelda. Pretty much hit the right combo right there.

But in all honestly if the market doesn't get itself some new IPs soon it's gonna crash baddddddly.

Sequels will keep this industry alive, so expect to see more proven ip from the big 3 over new ip.

im excited for both. but here is the thing, dont milk a franchise. i dont like a franchise to have 11 games. i like there to be a balance between both sequels and new IP's.

as for next gen, there are games im really excited for, games that would benefit from more power. for example uncharted, it relies a lot on technology to create its set pieces and awesome moments, so better hardware would benefit the game greatly and make the game franchise evolve and bring new things.

on the other hand when buying a new console i just love playing something entirely new, i like new experiences and i like new idea's. personally i would prefer the best of two worlds, i think companies should release a big console exclusive alongside a big new IP at launch. people who buy new consoles usually buy more than one game, give something something new, and something they love

As you say, new generation is always a good time to get new IP's off the ground, and I certainly think there is tonnes of excitement in seeing new images & videos from something fresh. And certainly, this gen has brought me plenty of brand new IP's that I've loved to pieces.

But I can't deny the thrill of thinking about franchises I love given the "next-gen" treatment (whatever that actually ends up being at this point). For example, my four weaknesses are Metal Gear Solid; Final Fantasy; WipEout & Ratchet. Any mention of them for the next generation would just cause inner fanboy meltdown that I'd have to try my best to control.

However, I think what Axum said that was echoed by you, Jay, is that a mix between both old & new is absolutely the best way to launch a console. And I hope we see that from both MS & Sony. Certainly Nintendo have done it quite well with both Wii & Wii-U.

Both. And it appears sony will be pushing both by expanding their main studios. For example GG has two projects outside of KZ: Merc. One is a KZ sequel and the other is a new IP. ND also has a two teams, one on TLOU (new IP) the other is most probably doing UC4

I expect and WANT both new IPs and Sequels
