As you say, new generation is always a good time to get new IP's off the ground, and I certainly think there is tonnes of excitement in seeing new images & videos from something fresh. And certainly, this gen has brought me plenty of brand new IP's that I've loved to pieces.
But I can't deny the thrill of thinking about franchises I love given the "next-gen" treatment (whatever that actually ends up being at this point). For example, my four weaknesses are Metal Gear Solid; Final Fantasy; WipEout & Ratchet. Any mention of them for the next generation would just cause inner fanboy meltdown that I'd have to try my best to control.
However, I think what Axum said that was echoed by you, Jay, is that a mix between both old & new is absolutely the best way to launch a console. And I hope we see that from both MS & Sony. Certainly Nintendo have done it quite well with both Wii & Wii-U.
