Forums - Nintendo - WiiU or WiiHD?

What was better option for Nintendo in next-gen?

WiiU 69 63.89%

WiiHD 39 36.11%

Total:108

By WiiHD I mean something like this:

AMD CPU/GPU combo (quad-core CPU; GPU at some 3-4x PS360)

Wiimote/Nunchuck as default; + Gamepad as part of "Deluxe" bundle

In this case, Gamepad is a peripheral - "convenience" game controller/home tablet, and not main feature. Main feature is still motion controls, with optional Gamepad as one of, but not crucial, difference between Nintendo and competition. 3rd parties have easier time porting their current titles to WiiHD, and performance gap between it and PS4/NextBox is not as wide as with WiiU.

Gamepad wouldn't work too well as a peripheral, it's integral to the vision of the current Wii U as it is. People might buy it if it doubled as an actual tablet.

Any Wii HD package should also include a Pro controller as well as a new version of the Remote and Nunchuck, or you would have a lot of the same issues with ports.

I couldn't see the Gamepad being a peripheral. It's too out of the box.

I'm not 100% sure about the tablet. I mean, sure, it's a great way to differentiate yourself from the market, but consider the idea that they could've made a more advanced wiimote instead. They could've sold this console for less and at the very least, people might have bought more games as a result. I'm just not sure what impact that tablet will have on the future of the console, and I'll admit this entire opinion is simply based on the initial launch, but this is a case where playing it safe might've been the best way to go. I almost feel like nintendo could've just made the Wii U and just have shipped with a pro controller and console only. You keep the regular Wii as the low cost console and let guys like Ubisoft rake in that Just Dance cash while getting royalties, then try to grab some of the market lost to the 360/PS3 with a $200 console and New Super Mario Bros U.

I mean, looking at things right now, there's no way Nintendo is gonna be able to pull of Wii numbers. At best, Nintendo should hope for 360/PS3 lifetime numbers, and that's with price cuts/sales.

But it is a peripheral, and you would still have to take it out of a box.

WiiHD, i prefer imaginary consoles from real ones

I just want a new Gamecube or Nintendo 128.

To be honest, I'm fully expecting controllers like that to appear in near future for all platforms...I think convenience factor is just too good to be overlooked and not offered to people who are willing to opt for it. If they are peripherals, anyone can decide if it suits its needs (and pockets) or standard controller + TV combo is all that is required.

Wii U for sure

If it was just an optional peripheral, it wouldn't get too much support from developers. The Gamepad is a great idea and deserves to be vastly supported as a main controller. I'm hoping that Kinect 2.0 ships with every Durango for the same purpose.

How would your set handle the backward compatibility with Wii games?

BTW, in my opinion: Wii Remote > Gamepad and Wii Sports 3 should be the bundled game game instead of Nintendo Land.
