Showing actual gameplay in the TV advertisements would be a start...

Unless it's a tech demo I don't expect the first wave of games to look a lot better. I expect first party games from Sony and MS to look like their best games this gen (Last of Us and Halo 4 respectively). So it will be kinda hard to advertise graphics for at least 6 months of both consoles on the market imo. They could show a game that's drastically better, but said game probably won't hit stores at launch. So if the game it's not ready to be published it will be kinda hard to advertise the consoles graphics at that point. A video could help sure, but having a product on your hands on a big TV screen speaks more than a youtube video.

I'm sure there will be the Gears of War/Killzone equivalent for them to show off but you're probably right in that that graphical fidelity won't be reached in the launch window.

It is a good question, no one should have to buy the new console based on promisses, IT HAS to show how awesome it is right from the start line.
Even the WiiU, the graphics and the power weren´t better, but at least it had the crazy gamepad, you had at least something diferent. You can not enjoy the console, but at least it have that little something...
If the other two don´t show us something solid, it will be a problem.
The PS3 and Xbox360 had an easy job, the HD transition is such a dramatic change, any idiot could see.
Now it is a very diferent ball game, again, we have exciting times ahead of us.

With Sony's new marketing team they will advertise games by having the owner of said game magically attract women.

I was going to mention this too. No more live action crap.
