I really question the cry about development cost going up all the time. Sure, sometimes they might, but also, new tech sometimes does more things for the designers, so you, in theory, could actually use less people.

They way things are going - DirectX gives you tools, then people are using Unreal Engine, CryEngine, Frostbyte, Havok, etc. on top of that. So actual game companies can rent/lease a design engine so they only make the game part and use the tools other companies have already made.

As the tech becomes better, stronger, and more accessible, it does open some additional doors for designers.

True look how all EA games now use the Frostbite 2 engine. That will save them a lot of time and money and games are going to look better than trying to continue with the Unreal Engine 3 (Mass Effect), Eclipse Engine (Dragon Age 2) and whatever engine the Need For Speed games used to have. On top of that also games like Medal of Honor, Command & Conquer and Army of Two.

Nintendo takes a loss with WiiU because of the GamePad, the console itself shouldn't be much more expensive than the PS360. Afterall WiiU specs wise is not above said consoles, save for more(but slower) ram.

4K will happen next gen, PS4 gpu will have 32 ROPs, enough for 4K.

4k may never happen for gaming - who the *** plays at that resolution? 2560 is adequate for the size of gaming screens, so there really is no need to surpass that, more so when we consider 4k TV's are for most people impractically large.

If you think the PS4 can game at 4k you've no idea what you're talking about. Even $1000 GPU's couldn't game at that resolution with a game with decent graphics.

There is always a need to surpass that, as long as tech can be improved that is. Currently there is a pixelwar going on on smartphones and tablets, my future  5" phone will have a 1080p screen, I'd definetly want something better than that on my 10x bigger tv.

We won't see retail games in 4K, I never said that, but we'll definetly have few PSN games native at that resolution, with upscale capabilties for 720/1080p games and movies, Sony will advertise it with its 4K tv sets.

The great think with smart phones and tablets are the users are not asking for BF3 to run on their iPad.

I don't think you understand how resolution works. To notice 4k on a TV, it has to be 60+ inches. The reason phones/tablets use HD is because you are much closer to them. It is really quite pointless to have 4k on a 24" screen. Or, that is what we are led to believe.

I seriously, seriously doubt any PSN game will be at 4k because it seems a waste of time to program a game in that resolution when a vast, vast minority will have 4k TV's. Even if their price comes down, I know I wouldn't want a 72" TV in my living room because it'd be too damn big xD

Sony will advertise it as a 4k scaling media player - nothing more imo.

I get the systems to play games. When I bought the Wii I knew it wouldn't look as good as Xbox 360 or PS3 but There's many games that I couldn't have played anywhere else. It will be the same with the new systems. I do have console preferences but no bias. I want all the systems and eventually I end up getting them all. Some of you guys act like 12 years olds sometimes. Remember we all like video games right?

I honestly don't understand why the Wii U is costing so much produce. Microsoft and SONY will be aiming to break even or make a small loss on each console at launch, and for a $400 price point, they could sell quite a powerful console.

I'm not expecting the jump that past generations have, but it will still be quite a jump. Graphics are one of the main incentives to buy a next-gen console, we're not graphics whores, we just want something new, exciting and impressive.

Something tells me that Nintendo doesn't have quite the push a Sony or MS does when it comes to getting companies to drop their prices on parts.  I mean, for as small a leap as the Wii U is over the PS3, and with the rumored specs, you would think they are paying close to retail to still be losing on every console purchase.

Hardware doesn't decide game budgets publishers and consumers do. A game that costs $100 million to make will cost that much no matter how powerful the hardware it is on is. More powerful hardware only means higher budgets if publishers are willing to increase budgets.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

True, but at the same time, the industry won't really survive with declining game sales year after year (dammit, trying to find that chart that shows how video game sales declined near the end of the last console cycle). If you want to debate whether those declining sales are really due to the console cycle, or if the new consoles will really boost sales again, that's fine. If you want to argue that the game developers are overweighing the benefits of the new sales compared to the cost of new development, that's fine as well.

But there's definitely a justification for it. I also wish a gaming journalist, or someone who's really knowledgeable would comment on the impact gaming cycles have on brands. For example, will Call of Duty be just as popular on the next gen consoles, or would the new generation give a chance for someone to step in first and offer something? Will players be willing to experiment more with different series at the beginning of a gen?

Anyway, things will be shaken up and change overall, so companies that see themselves going towards inevitable doom would want a new generation.

Yea whatever, just wait till those true next gen games start coming out and you'll see how "destroyed the industry is.

Why was this thread even made? They can survive most likely but this Gen will probably have another slow start like this Gen besides the Wii. DS, Xbox 360, and PS3 all got off to slow starts. I expect the same from them, thanks to gamers thinking $400 consoles is ok. Even though 360/PS3 proved otherwise, but anyways why was there's thread made? It only looks to encourage WiiU trolling. All it has done is have a bunch of WiiU trolls claiming its barely more powerful than 360/PS3 without a shread of evidence besides websites that have no clue either lol. They figure out part of the gpu and estimate from there. Of course the trolls eat it up. My favorite part is how they are certain the WiiU will fail after only two months of sales lol but of course for Sony plats we have to wait for the holidays lol(PS3,Vita). Or how the PS4 will certainly sell better than the WiiU lol. Like the PS3 was suppose to do against 360 and Wii? I even saw someone claim the PS3s current momentum will help the PS4. The PSP had plenty of demand in Japan when the Vita released and yet it still flopped and has been doing so for almost a year. Long story short, current Gen has no bearing on next Gen. To sum it all up, this looks like a thread made to stir trouble, and I'm a pro at doing such, so I should know.
