Forums - Sony - Why PSABR, Twisted Metal and Starhawk flopped

You forgot LBPK.

Flopped because it's all the qualities of Mod Nation Racers slapped with the LittleBigPlanet name. If Mod Nation never came around and LBPK was the only game I can gurantee you it would sell very well. But that's not the case. Sony should have improved upon Mod Nation and made more changes. It did sell very well when it was on sale for $10 on PSN though.

flops are based on expectations, and my expectations were just about what these games sold. all managed over 200k with twisted Metal doing 250k first wk i think.

i only saw advertisement for Twisted Metal, so Sony failed to advertise Starhawk and Sony All Starz.

Sony did promote Starhawk online a bit with game sites and All Stars got plenty of promotion with all those live action trailers. Let me make this clear. Due to all the major flaws none of these games would ever be major hits.

PSABR flopped because it sucks.

Starhawk is a good game but not for everyone and Sony marketing failed it.

Twisted Metal died because Sony rushed it out broken and unplayable online and then took forever to fix it. By the time it was good to go online, its time had passed.

If anything Sony wasted TOO MUCH money on Starhawk. Fun Multiplayer but clearly you didn't play the campaign. It sucks. Anyone who doesn't think it is one big demo is delusional. It's awful. Starhawk would be FAR more successful as a MP only PSN release. I promise you that. The campaign failed it. Nothing else.

PSASBR is really just not that fun. Lots of people played the beta, and the game frankly speaks for itself.

Starhawk should have sold better, seeing how it's actually pretty good.

Twisted Metal should have sold better as well,

All in all, none of these games are that good, they are fun and good, but they will never have the potential to sell as well as GOW Killzone or Uncharted.

Now if you want to talk about inexplainable flops, talk about infamous games and Resistance 3. Those were incredible.

You don't know what a flop is. I'm sure a lot of publishers/developers would kill for the sales the resistance and infamous series has sold. The infamous series has sold nearly 4 million or over 4 million across all of it's games and somehow it flopped? Infamous 2 had a lot of controversy for the changes Sucker Punch originally made and being available for free for Plus isn't exactly going to keep its legs going very well but it's still managed to sell probably over 2 million across retail and digital sales not even counting the Plus freebies. Resistance 2 has sold well over 2 million perhaps even 3 million by now and Resistance 3 has managed to climb past one million despite the lackluster MP and no co-op mode seperate from campaign co-op. Disappointing sales? absolutely. The campaign in Resistance 3 for my money is one of the best FPS campaigns ever, I love it and I loved Infamous 2 but neither games are even close to being "flops".

Hard to tell what a flop is unless we know how much money was set for the budget.

Also I have no idea what the Playstation All Star roster looks like, but how many of those characters did Sony have to make deals to get in their game? That is where they could have lost money.

Dude that is a low number for a AAA title and there was no excuse for a Sony die hard to not buy that game really.

1. No Cloud.

2. No Snake.

3. No Crash.

4. No Lara.

5. No Kazuma fucking Kiryu!

Five good excuses right there. They totally screwed the pooch on the roster.

Anyone who's saying PSASBR didn't flop for Sony, it was supposed to be the Super Smash Brothers for Playstation(although i realize Mario etc. is a stronger franchise). Anyone wants to compare sales between those games? Yeah didn't think so. But heres the truth, i think PSASBR sold exactly like i expected it to sell for what it is: a mediocre game.

I bought PSASBR and i was royaly dissapointed, it just isn't much fun. The whole mechanic of finishing opponents with a ''finish move'' ruins it for me. The rest of the fighting is pointless, since you don't do any damage and it just serves to fill your finish move meter. Also the weapons that you can pick up are hardly interesting, and again you can't finish anyone of with them. The fun of Super Smash Brothers was trying to hang on to a life with like 300%/400% and not get knocked of the stage. And then the singleplayer challenges witch aren't interesting, some bad characters(Nathan Drake for example) etc. etc.

I consider PSASBR to be an ''okay'' game but i wouldn't give it any more than a 6/6.5 out of 10.

Just curious. Why did you buy the game? Did you not play the beta? Did you not hear about the finishing moves? It's not like it was something they decided to include at the last minute.

Also, about the weapons, yes you can. The head of the medusa turns your opponent into stone and you just have to attack them once and they die. I get that it's all a matter of taste and that's fine, but I just don't get how you were unware of the finishing moves.

No i didn't play the Beta and yes i did know about the finishing moves though i guess i didn't fully realize how this who make it so much different from SUper Smash Brothers for example. Also all reviews stated that it still was great fun playing with friends, and that is why i ended up buying it. We've played it like two times and haven't played it since, it just isn't that much fun. I guess i should have tried out the beta first, but that doesn't make it a better game. On the other hand i probably does explain why it sold less than most expected, since alot of people probably decided not to buy it after trying the beta.

You're ignoring the budget of those games and how much some of them have made in the arcades.

We don't really know the budget for any of those games, do we?

You're right about forgetting about arcades though, I guess!

PSASBR, twisted metal, and starhawk are just multiplayer games with some "story" tutorials attached to get used to the multiplayer. The games are not worth the $60. They offer too title content in my opinion....... And I value a lot more a robust epic single player mode than any other MP thing.

but PSASBR is $40 and it is really good.  But if you played the BETA, the whole game is like playing the BETA 100 times.  The complete games offers so little that it feels like the BETA with more characters only.

If you play uncharted, GOW, Killzone, LBP; you can see the difference in quality between AAA games and these other 3 "AA" games.

To speak of Twisted Metal, Sony themselves seemed to have no confidence in its ability to sell. I don't recall much if anything in the way of fanfare.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Sony marketed Twisted Metal. I remember commercials and ads on plenty of gaming websites. Plus they had that live video feed on the TM website where you could literally take control of this machine gun they had set up in the desert, and shoot the **** out of a Sweet Tooth truck.

PSASBR was amazing and has sold over half a million copies. Nuff said.

I don't think half a million is something to brag about. But...

OT: When did they advertise these games? I saw nothing for PSASBR, and I don't remember anything for Twisted Metal either. (Can't talk about Starhawk.)

they advertised Twisted Metal? i searched and never found a commercial for the game.

you must be talking about those little "out now" images that pop up on sites like here(vgchartz)?

nooooooooooooooo i don't pay attention to those advertisments, but there were some TV advertisments for TM.

you got any links?

nope no luck. can't figure why. it's strange to to see it.

man, Twisted Metal PS3 never got a commercial

I was searching up and down for the Twisted Metal commercial when it came out but Sony never made 1

It did have a commercial, I remember seeing it a few times where I live but here it is. It just doesn't show the game itself, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn43glnOJVo

So, a typical Sony ad then? :P
