Forums - Gaming - To Clear up confusion on what makes Next-Generation

Very well said, JayWood2010. I'd like to add that it has also been made very clear since 2006 that graphics are no longer the kind of benchmark they used to be when judging what is "next generation" anyway. Generations are going to be measured the way you define it, if they are measured at all moving forward. The Ouya and Project Shield probably won't have graphics like a "PS4" (although Project Shield will have 4k display capabilites), and they too will be part of the next generation. The old-school way of measuring how strong or relevant a game console is has been unceremoniously flung to the side in favor of convenience, ease of use, and low cost / low price games and even free games. The Video Game industry isn't going to be able to say something like "it's got Blast Processing" and expect to corner the market that way. "Cheap, free, and easy" puts "Eye-popping graphics" in a Figure-Four... and listens to it scream. There aren't enough "hard-core gamers" in this world to support the entire industry. Not even half of it.

Thanks.  It's very intersting that "some" people consider power next gen because honestly they will all be wayyyy behind PC still

Power does not define a generation. People that use this type of argument are trying to bash Nintendo because they feel humiliated by the Wii in the last gen.

Wii U is a next-gen console. You guys accepting it or not.

It doesn't even have to be marginally more powerful. If you look at video game generations this is how they have been traditionally defined... chronology.  I'm nt going to bother digging through tech specs, but I can almost gurantee that there were more powerful consoles then the Atari 7800 when it released.  Hell I believe in some ways it was a backwords step from the 5200.

People are free to disagree... but they're just wrong and not worth argueing with, since it's either just a borinng pointless arguement or sadder an arguement made in the overall "console war".  Which in itself is nothing but a shame.

i's actually a moot discussion, and one that will not change anything at all

well, that is not entirely true, it will decide about people getting banned, if there will ever by a consensus, but there won't be, so at one point someone will have to decide if you can call what console next gen or last gen or whatever in this forum.

And that is all there is to it. A arbitrary definition that will not go beyond this forum and be reason for some bans.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

I disagree that there is confusion. People know full well what they are talking about but usually have an agenda and make statements to support their point of view.

You will have some people claiming that the Wii U is not next gen which would be wrong as it is the successor to the Wii. However I would say that within context it can be argued that in terms of performance the Wii U does not offer what we would expect from an 8th Gen console.

In short: A console's generation is determined solely on which consoles it is in primary competition with.
Gen3: NES, Master System, Atari 7800
Gen4: SNES, Genesis
Gen5: N64, Saturn, PS1
Gen6: GCN,
Xbox, PS2
Gen7: Wii, X360, PS3
Gen8: WiiU, X720, PS4

Exactly what I say all the time. The main competition makes up the gen. So far we didn't see a console, that competed in two gens, although wwe saw consoles that were competing only half a gen (Dremcast). Naturally a new console competes with the old gen for a short time, but mainly it's competitors will be the new gen.

True dat. Although Nintendo has really tested the boundaries of what defines a "next-generation" console since their last two consoles both utilized previous-gen technology.

"Previous-gen-tech" is laughable in the case of the Wii. Gamecube was together with XBox on top of gen 6. The Wii was way more powerful than gamecube. The Wii could show stuff, that was way ahead of gen 6. That XBOX360 and PS3 made a bigger jump tech-wise, doesn't mean the Wii employed prev-gen tech.

The Wii U is next-gen. The fact that anyone ever questioned that is sad.

The fact that Nintendo has left it open for questioning two generations in a row is sad.

They only did, what was Sony doing the two gens before: releasing a machine, that was lower-powered than the competition.

I thought consoles were made to play fun games on them, not to boast about which one is most likely to rival an airplane.

I can fly faster with Blast Processing than with an Emotion Engine. At least Sonic Speed!

I'm playing games since 1992 or less and alway the generations was defined by the similar power of the consoles.

So the guys are just changing that to fit Wii and Wii U.

My personal division...

Gen5: N64, Sega Saturn, PS2

Gen6: GCN, Xbox, PS2, Wii
Gen7: X360, PS3, WiiU
Gen8: X720, PS4

Wii is in the middle of the Gen6 or Gen7 so you can put it in any for fit your pourpose... the Wii U the same thing in the middle of Gen7 and Gen8.

I put they together the precious gen but I can't disagree with who puts them in the next gen.

Fixed the gens based on similar power of the consoles.
