Forums - Sony - By JayWood2010: Mistakes Sony can NOT make with PS4

Great first post by the way XD

Thanks! I added some slides with features in modern games that already leverage HD7000's compute architecture. Developers are slowly learning how to use DirectCompute for games, which means they should be a lot more familiar with how the PS4's GPU will work by the time it launches. PS3's GPU architecture was completely outdated by the time it launched. This is because starting in 2006, PC GPUs went to a unified shader architecture but RSX in PS3 was using the old "fixed pixel pipeline" architecture. Since Xbox 360 used the more modern unified shader architecture, and post-2006 PC games were coded around this, Xbox 360 became the go to multi-platform console. With HD7000 series (or HD8000), PS4 would gain the most modern/advanced architecture for DirectCompute, OpenCL and OpenGL. Therefore, outside of MS flat out beating Sony in terms of how powerful the graphics chip might be, it is actually impossible for MS to use a GPU with some next generation architecture because HD7000 is the latest from AMD.  Don't forget some other key bonus features of HD7000 series:

1) Native 1920x1080 Stereo 3D at 120 fps (60Hz/eye) gaming support (but I realize most people won't care for 3D gaming at 1080P, but this feature will also cost $0 with HD7000 cards); I believe PS3 3D gaming was only limited to 30 fps.

2) 7.1 Channel surround sound via HDMI, with no additional costs.

3) AMD's App Acceleration, that uses the video codec engine of HD7000 series cards to offload the CPU's load when watching 1080P movies. HD7000 cards can stream at least 6 x 1080P movies at the same time if you wanted to. Right now when you are watching 1080P BluRays or 1080P content on PS3, PS3 has to use the Cell for this because RSX's video codec engine is too primitive.

I think what Sony needs the most are a strong line-up of launch titles, continue on having awesome 1st party exclusives and keep the price as close as possible to $400.

I agree with Kresnik. If Sony copies their PS3 strategy post-Slim, I think they'll do fine.

Then explain to me how it isnt? If you are going to bring something up then back it up.  Im not argueing, if that is what you think.  If you bring something to my attention that I am unaware of then I will gladly admit that I am wrong but from everything I know this is correct in every way.  System sellers and games being released are two different things.  Persona 4 is a good game but certainly not a system seller.  same goes to little big planet and Gravity Rush. And it most certaily is a console that goes for $300 in many cases due to high priced memory cards.

I realised upon reading your first reply again that we're talking about two different things, I think.

You're saying (correct me if I'm wrong) that Sony haven't been supporting the Vita because they haven't been releasing any system sellers for it?

I was saying that Sony have thrown loads of support at Vita by publishing 13 games in its first year, something they didn't do for PS3 (15 games for 2006 + 2007 by my count).

Yeah, there's no system seller on Vita, I'm not arguing that at all.  I'm not really sure where you brought system sellers from actually.  I'm just saying that the support has been there from Sony.  They've brought the established franchises (Uncharted; LittleBigPlanet), mixed in new IP's (Unit 13; Gravity Rush) and bought exclusivity in big third-party games (Assassin's Creed; Call of Duty).  Yeah, things didn't pan out how they wanted - and again, that comes down to the mistakes they've made from simply not understanding the handheld market.  But I don't think you can draw too many parallels with how they messed up PS3 at launch & how they've messed up Vita.

But whatever.  The whole point I've been trying to make is: Sony begun in the home console market, they dominated it for years, they recovered by a lot of their own doing in 2009 (post slim, as Jay says).  I can see why someone would bring up Vita but honestly, Sony in the handheld market is a whole different kettle of fish, and while I could argue for hours with you about what they've done wrong with Vita, it has no relevance to the original point I was trying to make.

Does that explain it a little better?

The most important thing is that they can't repeat the NO GAEMZ problem of the PS3 and Vita.

If they have Flower 2 as a launch title will you buy more than 1 PS4??

For both PS4/Xbox720:

1-A cheaper system whit small grafx diferences (worse or better) than competitor and whit a good amount of multiplatform games (not necesary a lot of excluisve titles).

2-Arrogancy is useless against real facts.

3-Don't waste time and money if your exclusive games are selling worse than third party games (instead) try to sell useless and expensive harware accesories promising and awesome (but really a quick-out of date) gaming experience.

4-If the hardware is x86/x64 pc compatible you should consider change name product next gen as (PCStation5 and/or PCbox1440). This is really needed to do not confusing people if in Ps4 and Xbox720 is relative easy by users install an x86/x64 Operating System.

5-If from 1-4 points are accomplished you don't need make it easy developing for your system, in that case let others do it and you don't need payd them.

If they have Flower 2 as a launch title, I will buy out the entire first run of PS4s.

Ok yeah that makes more sense now XD

Yeah maybe i should have explained i was talking about system sellers and not just 1st party titles as even 3rd party games can be system sellers.  I'll take blame for that since I didn't explain that too well.  I tried keeping things as short as I could although it still turned out very long i still left out a few things including the operating system and online which they have definitely improved on post 2009.

But yes that explains it much better and I get what you are saying

I agree for the most part but I just want to extrapolate on the 4K concept. I felt it was pretty clear that Blu Ray would be the medium delivering 4K movies when Sony announced their moving forward with 4K content available on new movies. This was at CES. Sony even announced they will be providing a digital distribution service of 4K video. The PS4 will most likely have a good blu ray drive in it to read games faster. This blu ray drive will most likely support 4K video playback. I'm not sure if current blu ray drives will be able to handle 4K but maybe the blu ray disks themselves can handle older blu ray drives and keep lower resolution content, allowing the new blu ray disks to be compatible with any blu ray player. Unless they have to have different 4K disks, then maybe they will sell 4K movies separate or have them contain multiple disks.

While the new blu ray drives will be more expensive than current variety it will not be to the extent when blu ray was first introduced as they step in technology is far different. The difference in price might not be very extensive at all and given the new drives will help with game playback, this is an excepted cost. Sony won't want a cheap slow drive creating a bottleneck and holding its games back. A 4K blu ray player is not going to be a brand new technology. The PS4 is expected to sell 50-100 million over the course of 10 years and having it capable of 4K playback will be important for Sony's new direction.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
