Forums - Nintendo - Mario Kart is Nintendo's most valuable franchise

Is Mario Kart the most valuable series in Nintendo's portfolio?

Yes, it's Mario Kart 35 32.71%

No, it's still Super Mario 43 40.19%

It's gotta be Wii Sports 2 1.87%

Ice Climbers, duh 7 6.54%

Something else entirely 11 10.28%

I'm too drunk/tired to think. Results? 9 8.41%

Total:107

I never thought I'd say it, but Mario Kart might just be more valuable to Nintendo than any other series.

A quick look at the numbers (in millions):

Super Mario Kart: 8.76 (18% attach ratio) Super Mario World: 20.61 (42% attach ratio)
Mario Kart 64: 9.87 (30% attach ratio) Super Mario 64: 11.89 (36% attach ratio)
Mario Kart: Double Dash: 6.95 (32% attach ratio) Super Mario Sunshine: 6.31 (29% attach ratio)
Mario Kart DS: 22.42 (14.5% attach ratio) New Super Mario Bros.: 29.00 (19% attach ratio)
Mario Kart Wii: 33.38 (33% attach ratio) New Super Mario Bros. Wii: 26.59 (27% attach ratio)
Mario Kart 7: 7.49 (26.5% attach ratio) Super Mario 3D Land: 8.03 (28.5% attach ratio)
Mario Kart Wii U: ??? New Super Mario Bros. U: 1.46 (56.5% attach ratio)

I think the shift began during the sixth generation. Obviously both Super Mario and Mario Kart are healthy brands, but I think Mario Kart might be even more healthy. Of course one needs to take into account bundling, advertising, and price, but I think in general Mario Kart is more enticing to consumers than Super Mario. Certainly 3D Mario, and maybe even 2D Mario, which benefits in this table from its renaissance in 2006.

I would add to the table anecdotal evidence, which tells me that Mario Kart is the game that would inspire the most people to bite the bullet and purchase a Wii U.

Thoughts?

Apart from a couple spikes in 2006 and 2010, the franchise has been in decline since the groundbreaking sales of the first two generations. Also, the highest selling console game, while a huge success, didn't break six million units sold. Compare that to Mario Kart or Super Mario.

black and white is tracking ahead of dp, and how can the series be on a decline, when ruby and sapphire exists?

Pokemon series have sold over 200 million units

You can add Pokemon cartoon, merchandising and Pokemon Trading Card game that Nintendo is making bank off of.

Pokemon 1998: 31.27
Pokemon 1999: 23.10
Pokemon 2002: 15.85
Pokemon 2004: 10.49
Pokemon 2006: 18.04
Pokemon 2009: 11.48
Pokemon 2010: 14.59
Pokemon 2012: 6.16 (so far)

If we trust the VGChartz numbers, then there is decline. It's still a monster of a franchise, but it's not growing very much.

yeah sort of, it is generally if you count main games. It follows

However if you don't count only main games, it would be Pokemon Vs Mario, and Mario Games + Mario Kart is way bigger than anything pokemon.
