Some people think Sony will return to the PS2 sales with the PS4 and that the PS3 was just a slip up.

And some people thought Nintendo would dominate with the Wii U this gen. Look at how that turned out.

yo, you claim as if wii u has been out for awhile. CALM DOWN, its like ps3 came out, you cant judge intil later on, your judging a system thats been out for barely two months.

I'm just messing with him.

Wattttt??????? Im confused? Your being nice now!? I think im gonna throw in the white flag you win

ok well in my defense, im saying is i would be hyped (which i was) but to say nintendo won? Nintendo this and that? Not from me, everything i say will be realistic. Ex 3DS is doing so much better (obviously) than Vita and will continue to dominate but Vita overall has superior specs than 3ds! Truth given! Software are pretty much even Vita has Uncharted, AC liberation, Gravity Rush, etc. Just needs help in other areas

Overall I've seen a bunch of Sony and Nintendo doom articles and a bunch of "MS has more money so they will dominate" talk.

There are just as many articles boasting Sony but people tend to ignore what they "agree" with and emphasize what they don't.

I normally discourage those but people seem to think that because of the overall bad financial standing of the company that they can't spend money on anything now.  As in they won't advertise or have to sell PS4 at a profit, which I think is ridiculous.  Personally I'm not predicting anything as this generation proved the previous one means very little in determining the next.  People who make safe bets like "MS will win America, Sony Europe, and Nintendo Japan" are just using this gen as indicators ignoring all the variables that still are left unresolved.  Price is a pretty big freaking deal and we don't know what MS or Sony will price their machines.  I don't think power will matter that much as I don't think MS or Sony be powerful enough that devs will want to take advantage with multiplats (just like PS360 it didn't other than a few Sony 1st party titles).  Will MS have a subscription based model?  Will Sony charge for online?  What exclusives will there be ready?  The release dates are hopefully both for this holiday so we can have an even competition there (at least between the MS and Sony), but what about streaming?  What about BC?  I'll wait till at LEAST the 20th to decide.  My personal way of looking at it is MS had 4 HUGE advantages this gen (price, release date, architecture, and exclusives at the start when they matter a lot more).  What happened?  They are going to end up last.  If the 2 biggest of those are taken away (price and release date) then we could see a very large shift towards Sony.  But maybe I'm wrong and xbox brand is too big in US and UK now.  Maybe MS will make some monstrously powerful console and destroy the competition.  Maybe MS doesn't care as long as their OS dominance is protected so they'll just take a $200 loss and undercut Sony that way.   Who the hell knows at this point?

To be honest, everyone was a winner this generation. 80M consoles for a 3rd place by generation end is a complete success.

Now coming next gen every company has advantages and disavantages but i don't think any particular company will have an absolute advantage like Sony and the PS2.

It's too soon to predict how the battle between MS and Sony will unfold at this point but i'll wager that they won't be much different than the 7th gen. The biggest question i have right now is Microsoft's plan for Japan. Microsoft has "failed" in japan twice now and the thought of them trying a third time is hard to justify. While many will argue that Japan is becoming more and more a joke market, japanese games will still add variety to a library and incentives to buy a console over the other. Personally i prefer the X360 feature set better but i also wish for the same game variety that the PS3 enjoys. If the PS4 fixes some of the issues i have with the PS3 then i'll be very inclined to go with a PS4 next gen instead of an Xbox.

what issues precisely?  Controller size?  Party chat?  Shooter exclusives?  OS interface?

I don't think anyone said Sony will "destroy" anyone. If Microsoft or Nintendo's consoles fail then it's due to MS/Nintendo's mistakes. Wii U sales show it is unlikely to be market leader so the battle will be between PS4 and XBox 720. At this point there is NO way of knowing which will sell better. To even make any sort of predictions we at least need release dates.

With Wii U looking like it is dead on arrival, Sony would only need to beat MS to win the gen. That's why people would assume Sony will, because they have some momentum going.

But things could change, we have to wait and see.

Mostly the controller and  the UX.

The DS is considerably outdated now after 3 generations. I could talk about the X360 controller being better and yada yada but i won't. Let's just that Sony needs to improve their trigger and face button designs and make the controller more ergonomical.

Then there's the UX. Party chat is a no brainer as well as easily connecting to your friends. But what i like about the X360 the most is that games follow a more stricter set of guidelines. You can count of pretty much every X360 game of the same genre to have buttons mapped exactly the same which makes jumping from game to game much easier. On the PS3 this is basically all over the place and pretty much up to developers. Take uncharted for example, you're forced to use the shoulder buttons instead of the triggers which doesn't really seem intuitive and to make matters worse you can't even swap inputs.

I'm not a fan of shooters so for me Halo, GoW and COD is irrelevant when making a choice. The actual reason i'll be very inclined to go PS4 exclusively this time is Microsoft's stance on Japan(TBD).

I think Sony will be in a much better position with the PS4 than what they put themselves through with the PS3. But it's also important to understand that Microsoft doesn't depend on Sony to be successful. MS now has the know-how and resources to do more than Sony can at this point so it's all up in the air.
