Forums - Gaming - Resident Evil Will Return To Its Roots!!

Capcom has listened to fan feedback following Resident Evil 6 and knows that the series must return to its roots going forward, even mentioning the possibility of a reboot.

These comments come from Capcom’s Masachika Kawata, a long-term producer on the iconic survival horror series.

“I think that it’s important for us to have users’ needs in mind when making the games," Kawata told IGN. "At the same time I think a lot of what people want now is to have Chris and Jill in a game, or they want it to look like Resident Evil used to look like. That’s what makes the game work for them. We should be able to start from scratch and reboot it. It would still be Resident Evil. We wouldn’t lose the essential nature of what makes it a good game just by changing the characters.”

“Survival horror as a genre is never going to be on the same level, financially, as shooters and much more popular, mainstream games. At the same time, I think we need to have confidence to put money behind these projects, and it doesn’t mean we can’t focus on what we need to do as a survival horror game to meet fan’s needs. We are always taking in to account user feedback, even when the users’ are very upset about something.

“Looking at last year - something like, for example, Operation Racoon City  – it was quite an experimental attempt in bringing the Resident Evil series to new genres. And in light of that game, certainly I would say that I review my thoughts on that [the importance of action]. But I think it’s undeniable to say the series returning to its roots is important, and those roots are horror.”

We should be able to start from scratch and reboot it. It would still be Resident Evil. We wouldn’t lose the essential nature of what makes it a good game just by changing the characters.

Cool I liked Resident Evil 6 but a return to it's roots can only be a good thing for this diminishing brand. Now Square Enix needs to do the same thing with Final Fantasy.

I certainly don't mind where RE5 and RE6 where headed. A more action centered game with a bit of horror/suspense, either for dark or unsettling atmosphere or lack of supplies in harder difficulties, etc. I would like to see an actual horror RE come out soon. I don't know if the franchise needs a reboot however.

Hmm..All they need to do is make good, solid game, like Resident evil 4.

Take my love, take my land..

I'll believe it when I see it. There is still a big market for true survivial horror, but there is little backbone among developers to actually work towards making a half decent game of that description.

Resident Evil 6 is an okay action game but its a piss poor RE installation and has some massive, glaring flaws.

I really hope so. One of my favorite genre's is Survival Horror. The 1st 3 Resident Evil's + Code Veronica were great and then it went downhill. They always say that Horror is no longer financially safe but maybe if they put a decent budget on it and actually tried to make a great horror game people would buy it...

I'll believe it when I see it. For Resident Evil to return to it's roots it needs to throw away every mechanic its used in the last 3 games, and then innovate. This is very hard to do...

I'd be happy with what they did with the gamecube-incarnations. This should be a good start for new games.

I'd be happy if they made more games like REVELATIONS ie somewhere in between.

I think its good, but i think the problem with RE6 wasnt the action but the controls.

Still, i think the RE4/5/Revelations gameplay works best for the series. Revelations was quite enjoyable.
With that said, i wouldnt mind the return to fixed camera angles either, but that would only be possible in 2D remakes cause of the hated (not by me) "tank controls".
