The software sales for the Vita and Wii U are just dire.  74 Vita games have sales numbers on VGC, so it is only averaging about 1k per game.  The Wii U is a little better, 30 games and averaging about 2.5k per game.  However without Nintendo Land and NSMBU, the remaining 28 are only averaging about 1k, and of course all the software on the Wii U is recently released.  The third best selling game is ZombiU which only recorded 4,291 sales.  This is actually less than the third best selling game on the Vita, Need For Speed Most Wanted which saw 4,429 units sold.

If sales continue like this for the months to come, it might be difficult to convince retailers to continue stocking these systems.  Even the PS3 despite all the no games jokes, and not even yet released in Europe managed to have software sales 2.4x higher than the Wii U and Vita for the same week in 2007.  If you look at just the US, the PS3 was 5.5x higher, and that was without a bundled game.  The Wii was doing more than 10x the WiiU/Vita (even Twilight Princess alone beats them).

Let's face it, only Japan's numbers save face for 3DS. In NA Xbox 360 beats it and in the rest of the world PS3 beats it. The world outside of Japan is not yet grooving on Nintendo's current offerings; and that's a problem for Nintendo right now. And it's a potential future problem for the console industry if WiiU is going to be the leading console in sales of the next generation as many here are hoping and predicting; Unless Nintendo can pull it out of the bag, and Sony and MS ace their launches for their new consoles.

In Japan 3DS is almost at 1/3 of the DS LTD already. That's massive in such a short time. But globally 3DS is at 18% of DS. Take out Japan from the global numbers and it's at 15% across all markets outside of Japan. Japan can't sustain 3DS growth forever. It's far from dire for 3DS, but it's not all rosy either.

The industry is holding its breath right nowwaiting and hoping that something in 2013 will kickstart sales.

Well ok then; then I have to choose the greatest, and most important console of all time: the NES!! It had superior 3rd party support (like, 90% of all 3rd party games was released on it) and established some of the most important and well known franchises the gaming community ever did see.
