Something like that -- maybe offer F-Zero GX, Wind Waker, Paper Mario TTYD, or Kirby's Air Ride -- a GameCube game from a franchise that likely doesn't have a Wii U iteration coming within the next year.

Giving everyone Pikmin for free right before a new game launches would be suicide for Pikmin 3.

On the other hand, maybe it will draw more people to it, like Sacred Stones apparently did for Fire Emblem.

I don't know how exposing people to the series would be a bad thing especially if there are a few months between them.  Pikmin is sort of a niche franchise, and I think that the exposure would be helpful.

Are there any Japanese-only GCN titles that might find a home on the Virtual Console?

On the Wii Virtual Console, we got games like Sin & Punishment, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Rondo of Blood. I wonder what other imports we might get.
