I think one or two freebies would be nice, four is a bit much to ask. Consider when the 3DS eShop was kicked off, Excitebike 3D was free for a short time. Something like that -- maybe offer F-Zero GX, Wind Waker, Paper Mario TTYD, or Kirby's Air Ride -- a GameCube game from a franchise that likely doesn't have a Wii U iteration coming within the next year.

Giving everyone Pikmin for free right before a new game launches would be suicide for Pikmin 3.

I don't know how exposing people to the series would be a bad thing especially if there are a few months between them.  Pikmin is sort of a niche franchise, and I think that the exposure would be helpful.
