Forums - General - Consoles and fanboys, historically, where did this hate come from?

There were some pretty serious rivalries during the SNES/Genesis days, but the fire of that conflict was stoked by advertisements mostly. Today, rabid fans invent the conflict on their own, empowered by the freedom of movement and anonymity of the internet.

Thankfully, these fans are a small minority. But they are vocal, and forums such as this one serve as a megaphone.

Not true at all. Fanboys are a part of this industry. I was a huge Nintendo fanboy back in the 80's. So my point is fanboys will always exist.

according to your profile you are 21, so i am guessing you lied about your profile age? i am so reporting you for lying to the site :P

Okay, when I was a little boy and I had some video game systems like the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis, I remember this one kid I knew had a NeoGeo system with ridiculously expensive cartridges.   I remember the games for the system were like $180 for one cartridge.  I thought it was a cool powerful console, but I didn't hate on that console because I didn't have that console.

Fast forward to today's video games systems, and now you have this phenomenon where some people, if they have one of the systems like the 360 or PS3 or the Wii, but not the others, they hate that other system, even hating the other people who have the other systems.

So what gives?

Is it jealousy?

And how come people weren't like this in the time of the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis consoles?

Did people turn into bigger jerks today?

My dislike for sony is from there customer service. My launch ps2 broke and they wouldn't replace it, bought another, same thing. Went to xbox and when my 360 broke I got a new one with no problem. So my dislike is from experience.

No other company has/had more fake fans than Nintendo.

and they all have almost the same story to tell

it's basic human behaviour that goes way back to the stone age when the decisions you made could decide about living another day. And you had to defend your decision about eating the blue berries against the red berries fans!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Here are the Class of being Gamer.
Fan - just a fan and prefer it over the other.
Fanboy - cares about their favorite company, hates one of the other completely, and have mixed feeling for the other
Drone - worship that company, bashing others, troll, always say that company wins every year in gaming.
Multi-Console Owner - owns all and respect all even the flaws are to be called out
PC Elitist - PC over consoles and handhelds
Fanboy Elitist - ONLY cares about that company

You're asking where tribalism comes from? I think it originated when the original cave people had an argument between themselves and one lot moved to another cave and said their new cave was better than the old cave. Fast forward: nationalism, racism, sports rivalries, phone warz, PC vs Mac, console warz, peanut M&Ms vs plain M&Ms...

It's such an ancient thing I'm surprised anyone even needs to ask where this thing came from.

Peanut M&Ms are ACTUALLY inferior though, there's no argument about it.

Yes, but peanut butter M&Ms are fine. We have no problem with those. Just keep your filthy peanuts away from us.

Threadjack FTW!!!

Peanut butter M&Ms are gross!!!

peanut>plain>>>>>>>peanut butter. I hate Reese's peanut butter cups too. In fact any confectionary combination of peanut butter and chocolate is nasty. Peanuts and chocolate = great.

OT: see how it works?

@binary solo

Wow, I see it happening right before my own eyes!!  Wow!!   And about M&Ms too!

I understand now.....I think I can learn how to do it!

Hey let me try it now....

Hey binary solo, my signature is better than your signature!  It's not opinion.....it's fact!!
(How am I doing?  Am I doing it correctly?  LOL)

We always had fanboys. They are more visible now because of the Internet and that is it.
