Historically?
Short answer it's part of human nature.
Humans worshipped kings and we still worship celebrities. All major companies are worshipped to some extent. Also humans have worshipped and do worship gods. Since people do do that, it's likely that all the fanboyism is just a manifestation of our nature.

Fast forward to today's video games systems, and now you have this phenomenon where some people, if they have one of the systems like the 360 or PS3 or the Wii, but not the others, they hate that other system, even hating the other people who have the other systems.
So what gives? Is it jealousy? And how come people weren't like this in the time of the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis consoles? Did people turn into bigger jerks today? |
honestly, I find most of the fanboy attitudes I see seem to come from people that are trying to justify their purchase, or lack of purchase. People only have so much money, and one way that people seem to talk themselves out of spending more money is they develop animosity towards other consoles. It seems to be a subconsious thing, but they will look at every flaw and ignore positives in order to convince themselves that they shouldn't buy it.
I don't think it is very healthy, but whatever they have to do to balance their checkbook I guess...

360/PS3 actually started in the previous generation, and nothing like how you stated.
Since multiple consoles existed, there have been fanboys. The only thing now is there is so many different mediums for them to easily express themselves.

As it pertains to consoles - the Sega vs. Nintendo 16 bit war was pretty intense. It was mostly playground fist fights over which MK had blood vs. sweat. Before Internet, there wasn't so much access to sales numbers or every little thing some company executive said that offended a group of fans of the opposing console. In that sense, it's probably worse now.

yeah, that's what I meant, it seems worse now....I suppose the internet hasn't helped any, LOL
Not just consoles, it's anything related to 'Geek Culture'.
Geeks/nerds/dweebs whatever often become very protective and defensive of the things they're 'into' and think they're the only person in the world who truly 'gets it', therefore anyone who actively seeks out a rival product becomes their sworn enemy, a pleb in their eyes... so they retreat back to their basements and their fungus collections...and write nasty things on the internet (where no one really knows who they are) in an act of revenge.
