Bigger phones with more computer like functions seem to be the trend nowadays.
Plus it would give Apple another line of phones, instead of one vanilla flavored iPhone, I think that's part of the reason a lot of people like Android because there is some choice.
A larger screen can also open the door to more widgets and iOS changes.
For "mom and dad" who can't handle the change, you still have the regular iPhone for them.
If you want a small phone, that's why they'd keep the existing iPhone around, but it seems silly IMO to basically just gift an entire chunk of consumers who want a larger screen to Samsung and Google.
An iPhone with a 5 inch, best in class display, plus the iOS ecosystem (most apps, most games, etc.), the fastest processor, and more customization, would really address a lot of issues as to why many people choose Android over iPhone.
