Forums - Gaming Discussion - New bill would make ESRB ratings legally binding

I don't understand why games are singled out. It makes no sense to me. In my opinion, violent movies are far worse, as they depict realistic-looking violence done to actual human beings. I've never even come close to being bothered by videogame violence, yet watching parts of Scarface when I was a kid really bothered me.

Also, that's just what we need, more sting operations aimed at workers making minimum wage seeking to fine them hundreds of dollars.

While it annoys me how many kids go against these recommendations, making it outright illegal for kids to play games with "Mature" ratings is an excessive measure.
Besides, if rating systems were properly enforced, no M-rated game would ever break even again. :P

Well someone has to do it: if any 16 year old girl wants a M game, call me and i'll get the game for you.. You can pick it up later by going through my backdoor to the basement.. If you are allergic to chloroform please state that before you pick up the game..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

You can't regulate speech unless it fails the Miller test. They would have to prove that M and AO-rated video games have no artistic merit outside of their own efforts to be profane, which is insanely difficult to prove for anything except hardcore porn.

In state-level news, Missouri representative Diane Franklin (R-123rd District) introduced HB 157 to the state's General Assembly this week, proposing that all games rated T, M, or AO carry a 1 percent excise tax. Revenue derived from this initiative would go toward mental health programs in the state.

How's about a 1% excise tax on acting like a busybody douche while being an incumbent? All proceeds would go toward funding the campaign(s) of your opponent(s).

Personally I think that ESRB ratings are inferior to the PEGI ratings. I mean all the ESRB has are black and white letters. I highly doubt parents even pay attention to that. Honestly, who ever reads those things on the back of the box that lists what's in there?

PEGI on the other hand, are extremely visual about informing the buyers, they actually have colored in numbers for the recommended age and it is very noticeable. Not to mention that the 18 rated uses the visual cue for danger, the color red. They have separate symbols for drug use, profanity, violence and the like.

It may just be that the ratings system doesn't have to be better enforced, but a new one needs to be made up from scratch. Compare.

Live in America btw, those symbols are really hard to see compared to the boxart. I was surprised when I 1st saw the PEGI system, because it just made a lot more sense.

I don't have any problem keeping kids away from adult media.

parents will still buy rated M games for their kids

This isn't any different than walmart already currently is...

All it is enforcing the whole point of ESRB. And as a responsible parent you can buy a game for your kid.

I don't care much either way as it doesn't affect me in the slightest, and if I have a kid, I wouldn't let him play GTA when he's 10 anyways, but they should enforce the ESRB ratings, or abolish it all together as it's a waste otherwise imo.

i'm not against it.
