"The way IGN has been towards JRPGs this generation"? You mean... generous? Not sure why you would be surprised.

Halo: Reach - 10
Uncharted 3 - 10

Tales of Vesperia - 8.2

Hardly.

8.2 is a great score. I don't know Vesperia, but even if it's a legit 10/10, you shouldn't hold a grudge over a single game. Anyway, 8.2 is three points above the game's Metascore, so IGN graded it higher than most.

FFXIII -- 8.9
FFXIII-2 -- 8.0
Xenoblade -- 9.0
The Last Story -- 8.5
Pokémon Black & White -- 9.0
Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 -- 9.6
The World Ends With You -- 9.0
SMT: Devil Survivor -- 8.7
Valkyria Chronicles -- 9.0
Dragon Quest V -- 8.9
Folklore -- 9.0
Radiant Historia -- 8.5
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time -- 9.0
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story -- 9.5

IGN scored many other JRPGs with an 8 or higher this generation. I see no overwhelming bias against the genre in their reviews. If there is a lack of 9.5-10s, maybe it's because this wasn't the best generation ever for the JRPG as a whole.

Wow, I should have just used its metascore instead then. 79 for Tales of Vesperia is a joke, almost every JRPG fan would agree that it's a stunning game.

Anyway, those are only a few decent scores and are from IGN only.

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/available/ps3/metascore?hardware=all&view=condensed

The highest rated JRPG on the PS3 is Demon's Souls at 89, and that's probably only because it's styled more like a Western game. Go further down the list to find a more Japanese styled JRPG and it is Valkyria Chronicles at 86.

Do the same for the 360 and the high rated Japanese styled JRPG is Final Fantasy XIII at 82!

I think review scores for JRPG are extremely deflated, there are at least a few JRPGs on each console worth a score of 90+, let alone 80+.

(I might have missed a game or two out on the list, I only skimmed over the list)

Game Informer gave it a 7/10, but they disliked the difficulty level and the "absurd amount of random encounters".

There are no random encounters, lol.

If you read the review, it clarifies what it meant by "random encounters".

"...and while enemies are visible on the field, they charge instantly once spotting you. Avoiding them is next to impossible, even after upgrading Oliver's speed."

Not quite random encounters, but I must say this system is barely an improvement as it still leads to many forced skirmishes.

I myself not too happy with a handful of the design choices in Ni No Kuni. However, like the very best JRPGs, it makes up for annoyances through the quality and uniqueness of its presentation. There's nothing else quite like it, and I think that's awesome.

Again, 89 is an excellent score. 86 is also great. You could argue that Western RPGs were more well-received this generation, you could argue that the reason for that is because Western journalists are generally biased against Japanese games, or you could argue that it's because Western RPG developers made greater strides than their Japanese counterparts this generation. Compare Skyrim to Morrowind and the Mass Effect Trilogy to KOTOR, while comparing Final Fantasy XIII to Final Fantasy XII... yeah.

Of course, there were terrific JRPGs this generation as well, and they were generally rewarded with scores between 8 and 9. Maybe if you looked beyond the PS3 and 360, you'd see something you liked -- the DS has two JRPGs with Metascores over 90 (although one is a remake of a SNES game), and the Wii has one, the highest-rated original JRPG this generation (so far -- we'll see where Ni No Kuni winds up).

Anyway, it's irrelevant. I was originally responding to the suggestion that IGN is biased against JRPGs, and it seems to me that even if that is the case, they are less biased than most Western journalists. On the other extreme, there is a possibility that IGN is biased in favor of JRPGs, since their scores seem to hit above the average for the genre with decent frequency, while Metacritic claims their average score is 4.1 points below those of other critics.

He said he's never been disappointed by Level 5 but that's because he has never played WKC.

I just cannot be hyped for this game because the main character is a child... if it were not for that then I probably would buy it day one.
