Forums - Nintendo - What are the only games that can actually push Wii U sales? Please, do not kid yourselves!

I just don't see a Pokemon game on a Home Console selling, despite how much GameFreak and Nintendo put into it. Pokemon is traditionally Handheld and I think it'll remain there for quite a long time as many people like having that pick up and go factor for these types of games.

Then again, we never really know what the future holds.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you that it's not a certainty by any stretch.  I just think we've never really seen a proper Pokemon game on consoles.  When we do get them, they can be decent titles (5.5m) but not quite what people wanted (2.5m).  I think it's definitely an area that could be greatly improved given the right title and a bit of marketing.

But then the issue comes down to what I mentioned before, which is "Why would Nintendo want to?"  Like I say, I just can't see any reason for them to try it at this point in time.  Developing assets for a HD Pokemon game which may cost anywhere between 4-10 times more than a 3DS Pokemon game while selling half as much (optimistically) just seems like a poor idea.  Then again, you could stretch that line of argument for any of Nintendo's properties, really, yet we see them on both handhelds and home consoles.  Like you say, I guess we'll see what the future holds.

I sure don't agree with the Pokemon part! (Unless Nintendo made a actual Generation for the Wii U, which I doubt would ever happen.) Zelda and Super Smash Bros. are good choices. One of the biggest console sellers is Mario Kart, though. It pushes many sales through the holidays and has quite amazing legs.

A Pokemon game with NFC functionality and figurines will be a licence to print money and most definitely will happen.

I don't see why a Pokemon game boosting sales is so unimaginable. The thing with it is, it needs to be a proper, full version of Pokemon (possibly mmo-esque, but at least Monster Hunter levels of co-op play), ideally developed by Game Freak.  Not some company I had to look up on Wikipedia who apparently have done nothing of note since their ill-fated Gamecube attempts (although Colosseum really wasn't that awful).

The problem with this is: why would Nintendo want to do that? Unless it was some kind of home console crisis where they had exhausted all their other avenues *coughMarioKart* and the thing still wasn't taking off, there would just be no point. Game Freak can just use less resources to make a handheld title which would still sell more copies, thus netting more profit.

So yeah. Unlikely, but you never know.

And to answer the question, as I hinted at before, the answer is most likely Mario Kart. Or, Mario Kart + new Mario platformer + price cut. Since we've seen that one work recently!

Pokemon handheld vs console is like debating Monster Hunter handheld vs console. As long as JP devs believe there's more to be made on handhelds they'll stick to them.

Skylanders got 500million, Pokemon can quadruple that easily, there is no franchise stronger at wrenching out Children's birthday money and making parents buy kids 3DS's

I know others have spoke against a console Pokemon RPG, and their reasons are valid.

But I would personally LOVE a console Pokemon RPG. I would in fact use harden then string shot the screen while yelling super effective.

I totally agree with you.

Why risk not making money when you already have a fool proof way?

Pokemon would not sell on a console no matter what.
Mario Kart would push the Wii U sales up the most, but that big gun needs to be saved for Holiday 2014.

pokemon MMO. make it happen.

They could do with a new IP that demonstrates the Gamepad functionality in an easy to understand concept. NintendoLand is great but it's not as easy to explain as Wii Sports.

Alternativley they could get in contact with Rovio and get them to make an exclusive Angry Birds game... No seriously take the Ninja Castle game from Nintendoland (So you point the pad at the TV to aim), but instead of using the touchscreen to flick ninja stars you use it to pull back on the slingshot. Then on the tv, you have full 3D corridor like enviroments with the Pigs hidden behind objects and stuff. Therefore you would have a hugely popular IP that's played in a new and easy to advertise way that can only be done on the WiiU.
