It's worth noting that assault rifles typically have about about half the maximum muzzle energy and by extension half the potential stopping power of hunting rifles. I know that this doesn't take all of the available caliburs and the projectiles' ballistics into account but it's generally representative. For example, an AKM will typically have about 1,500 foot pounds of force at the muzzle (maybe as high as 1,800 with overpressure ammunition) but a Remington 700 chambered in .30-06 will produce around 3,000 foot pounds of force at the muzzle. If both weapons are only available as semi-automatics than the hunting rifle is the more dangerous firearm 99% of the time.

The hyper-liberal comment was directed towards nuckles87. I agree about the sad state of affairs that the fear-mongering media has created. The average person knows so little about firearms beyond the knee-jerk reaction that they have been programmed to respond with.

Care to define the term assault rifle? Try to avoid looking up the definition, that would be deceitful. Also, why is an easily conceiled handgun, which is far more likely to be used to commit a crime okay when a semi-automatic version of an assault is not?

Who cares what the rest of the world thinks? Citizens of foreign nations typically do not understand the cultural values and societal norms of those who live elsewhere. Why would you ever allow these people, no matter how good their intent, to dictate how you or your government behaves?

I just don think a civilian should have access to a gun that can unload a large number of bullets....and pretty much meant for firefights, nevermind home defense.
I just can't believe how over-reactionary and alarmist people are being over guns right now. Guns only fire if the trigger is pulled.
I think our Constitution is already being trampled over and spit on enough as it is, without the ridiculous, emotional calls for more government-regulated restrictions coming from all but the most reasonable among us.
To some this may seem too blunt or harsh, but it is nevertheless as true as it's ever been: "Dead people make bad laws".
Translation for the less-rational among us: Just because you're upset about something that happened, don't over-react and let your emotions get the better of you, and pass a law just to make yourselves temporarily feel better.
Consider the consequences of the incremental chipping away of our rights as free citizens.

And all this comes from a country which allowas their citizens to own a tank and weapons meant to use in war

im not saying that to be insulting, i just want to know what you think an "assault rifle" is, and why you think it should be banned.
