maybe instead of killing criminals, we should start asking ourselves why and how criminals are created, and go to the roots of the problem

Wow! I'm sure nobody has ever asked that question, and if somebody just decided to ask that, and the criminals found out what made them such angry doo doo heads, they would stop being such bad, yucky meanie heads and we could all sing happy songs and live in harmony! :/

On a serious note, yeah, that's not going to change anything. Even if we could make cultural changes to reduce violence, it's not going to happen overnight and can never completely eliminate it, so people still need to be able to defend themselves.

Japan never had guns in the first place, so there are none in circulation. If you honestly think you can compare Japan and the U.S on a one-to-one basis you need to take a few history courses and a statistics course. 

Also, it's an island, so it's a lot easier to control what comes in to the country. If we outlawed guns in the U.S. (where there are already 300 million guns in existence), the law abiding citizens would turn their guns over, the criminals would keep theirs (because they, by definition, do not obey the law), the black market would have a huge boom with guns coming across our southern border, and crime would skyrocket. Guns are the great equalizer, if a criminal breaks into my house with a handgun or knife, and I have a shotgun, I have a much better chance of winning and keeping my family safe.

Nor does Switzerland, but they give each family a fully automatic assault rifle.

Additionally, there are places in the US that are as safe as any ultra-safe European country. Did you know our murder rates vary from about 1.0 per 100,000 up to 30.0 per 100,000? May want to look into what the 1.0 places are doing vs. the 30.0's.

Switzerland have very strict regulations and training for gun ownership (look it up), they also have a strong community based culture, this is what people want for the US

They've had cases of shootings but took the guns away. Their gun murder rate last year was two I believe.
