My #14 is The Passion of Joan of Arc, a haunting portrayal of the last hours of Joan of Arc. The movie is famous for its sophisticated and expensive production design and its camera work -- which allowed for many close-up shots. But what lingers after the movie ends are the faces: the tortured, somber face of Joan, the cruel, grotesque faces of her interrogators. Director Carl Theodor Dreyer used high-contrast photography (and no makeup) to show his audience all the imperfections of his actors' faces. In The Passion of Joan of Arc, facial expressions tell the story. Renee Falconetti's performance as Joan is one of the best in world cinema.

Sounds like Terminator 2.

My 14th pick has to wait a little bit, I'm still in the middle of watching it. I waited too long to start, it's so damn long :)

14. Lord of the rings extended cut, 2001-2003, Peter Jackson

The big one, I just got done watching all 6 discs again. Quite an achievement for a movie to be able to keep your interest for 10 hours and 53 minutes. (excluding the 68 minutes combined end titles) I waited for the blu-ray version to be released before getting the extended edition. The actual visual upgrade was a bit dissappointing after the long wait. Not too surprising as the movie was originally mastered in 2K, while shot in soft focus with flat lighting, no doubt to make it blend better with all the cgi. It was also a learning process with new technology, you can see the visual upgrades in two towers and return of the king. (with the disadvantage that the cgi sticks out more in return of the king)

Although it might not have aged as well as Alien or even Ben Hur due to tech limitations, the advantages of cgi are obvious. Lotr offers a rich and vast fantasy world that would have been far too time consuming and costly to create otherwise. And it still had to be split in 3 parts and be about a story everyone knows (of) to be lucrative enough to take on.

I prefer the extended edition over the theatrical release as it balances the journey parts better against the fight scenes imo. The journey is what draws me most to the movie. The vast landscapes, dangerous places and amazing cities. Quite different from how I had imagined it while reading the book, and actually even better in places. Great performances by Frodo, Sam and Smeagol too. (they deserved some more screen time in the first half of return of the king imo)

Overall an excellent movie that sucks you into its world for 11 hours, something only a repetivive rpg can otherwise offer. Not bound by episodic format restraints I prefer this kind of triple movie deal over a series like Game of thrones.

My #13 is 8 1/2, a semi-autobiographical movie by Italian director Federico Fellini. The title 8 1/2 refers to the number of movies Fellini had made. The movie, which focuses around the life of a troubled film director, is a very difficult and cerebral experience. Fellini weaves flashbacks and dreams into the narrative, often confusing reality and fantasy for his audience. Never before (and nevers since) has a movie so cleverly mixed together life and art in a movie.

My next movie is based on real life events about kids growing up around drugs and guns. The first time actors in the movie actually lived in the place the story is based on.

basketball diaries maybe ?

Tsubasa Ozora

Keiner kann ihn bremsen, keiner macht ihm was vor. Immer der richtige Schuss, immer zur richtigen Zeit. Superfussball, Fairer Fussball. Er ist unser Torschützenkönig und Held.

No, the movie is more recent then that. It spans events in the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Posted my 13th pick Terminator 2 as correctly guessed by SvennoJ my next movie is my favorite movie of a franchise that has six movies so far.
