I have, but you suggested a successor to the PS2.  The PS3 was no successor to the PS2.  The only succession it offers is in that it followed the PS2.

I'd personally think that after the ps4 comes out they're going to drop the ps3 like a bad habit just so they don't end up with a situation like their handhelds, New gen one with zero BC causes the older hardware to compete for sales for the one company. The ps4 simply wont be able to have hardware BC and compete so they're going to want to distance the new platform right off the bat to prevent it having competition from their last gen machine.


I think I read on Eurogamer in an interview that Sony intends to support the PS3 until 2016... I dont see this changing. You see how many consoles the Wii sold even with the Wii-U out... at the end of the day, thats all combined sales. If you are taking a small hit on your new console, you are definately going to want to keep selling the other console that makes you money.

and delivered the most amazing exclusives for a gen as well as the only fully-fledged, free online suite ever for a console.  Also it introduced PS+ the best paid subsciption model for a console ever by far.  PS3 has given us Uncharted, Ratchet Future, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Infamous, LBP, Journey, Flower, God of War 3, HD collections, with Last of Us, GoW: Ascension, Ni No Kuni, Puppeteer, Beyond, and Sly left to come as well as all the third party offerings.  It has earned its place among its brethren.  It may well pass PS1 with time as well sales wise.
