Well that's not much of an achievement since its competitors for the position are buggy and widely despised, and 12 years old, respectively.

And then they'll release another OS in a couple of years with significant improvements that do something other than ruin the UI (making the user fix it himself), and everything will be fine again. It's a nice cycle.

Steam runs fine on my Windows 8 notebook so I don't really see why Gaben was complaining. It's not like you have to use their appstore.

Keep in mind that Windows Blue is coming which means that Windows 8 will probably be the last major OS change for a while from microsoft.  I doubt you will ever have to install a new OS to be honest. It will be the same as OSX. 20 dollar yearly or bi-yearly upgrades...

What's more impressive is how many people are holding on to XP.

No one is debating this. 

The interesting aspect of this point is that windows 8 is picking up marketshare faster amongst gamers than amongst rest. the latest web stats put windows 8 at 2-3% OS marketshare worldwide. So 7% on Steam is quite a difference...

Windows 8 runs Steam just fine, as well as eyefinity/nvidia surround, 3D vision and anything else gamers care about so I am not surprised it's increasing in marketshare faster.

No. What he is saying is actually.  "Shit, windows marketplace, oh no! competition!"


I think its a mix of both. I've ran in to old friends that are computer programmers for a living and they can't STAND windows 8. It's actually really funny to see... These people use computers so much that they have existing computer navigation essentially memorized in their subconscious. I think Gabe belongs in that category.

Making those types of people use Windows 8 is like asking them to re-learn the UI of something they really don't need to think about. Doing this tends to cause frustration and anger sharks to start swimming... I've seen it first hand.

That's pretty weak for windows 8 but what reason is there to upgrade if your monitor don't have a touchscreen?

I upgraded because it was only £25, so I thought why not give it a go... It doesn't make much difference, but is probably slightly quicker and the searching stuff is pretty good

But essentially, it doesn't really have any impact at all, just a bit quicker, but not too noticable on a 6 month old high end PC

Yeah i tried it in PC world and i didn't really like it to be honest plus it felt strange using windows 8 with a mouse and keyboard, it's made for a touchscreen and you can really tell. I like windows 7 anyway.

It works quite well with keyboard shortcuts seemingly improved from Win 7. Also, clicking in the corners can quickly swap between apps and go back to the start menu

My main issue is that I use 2 monitors and you can only use metro apps on one screen, it is kind of annoying... I can have the Netflix Win 8 app on one screen and then use chrome on the other, but the app can disapear sometimes if I open other Windows from the start bar, it is little confusing so I just generally stick to Netflix in chrome. The main useful thing is putting skype in a sidebar while using the rest of my screen works quite well

It's not getting there fast enough. Personally i'll just skip it and wait for the next one in 2014.
