That's probably more a tribute to those users' unwillingness or inability to upgrade their entire set up more than anything else. I highly doubt anyone is buying or building new PCs and downgrading the OS to XP. For one thing, VGA card driver support for new cards and the most current APIs is no longer officially supported. DX10 won't even run on XP without hacks. 

And I'd also be inclined to agree that it's unlikely many people are buying PCs specifically for Windows 8... except for those who want touchscreen PCs.

Well that's not much of an achievement since its competitors for the position are buggy and widely despised, and 12 years old, respectively.

It'll probably rise higher than Vista did, but nowhere near the heights that 7 reached. And then they'll release another OS in a couple of years with significant improvements that do something other than ruin the UI (making the user fix it himself), and everything will be fine again. It's a nice cycle.

Steam runs fine on my Windows 8 notebook so I don't really see why Gaben was complaining. It's not like you have to use their appstore.

Keep in mind that Windows Blue is coming which means that Windows 8 will probably be the last major OS change for a while from microsoft.  I doubt you will ever have to install a new OS to be honest. It will be the same as OSX. 20 dollar yearly or bi-yearly upgrades...
