Microsoft moves another 20 million Windows 8 licenses over holiday season, 100 million total app downloads

Ready for your quarterly dose of Windows 8 sales figures? After hearing that some 40 million licenses had been sold through last November, the company's CFO and CMO for Windows Tammi Reller announced here at CES that Microsoft has sold 60 million Windows 8 licenses to date. According to her, that number includes "sell in to OEMs for new PCs," but she didn't clarify whether or not it includes blockbuster deals like the $617 million one it recently landed with the US Army, Air Force and DISA. Reller also noted that the numbers are "roughly in line with where we would have been with Windows 7." Moving 20 million of anything over a single holiday season is pretty impressive, and we'll be keeping an ear out for more details should they emerge.

Update: Microsoft also announced that "since the opening of the Windows Store the number of apps has quadrupled and it passed the 100 million app download mark – just two months after general availability."

People can say they don't like Win 8, but you can't say it isn't making a lot of money.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

It's half the price per license, and it didn't increase PC sales. So yes you can say that.

100m app downloads includes free apps, the number is worthless without the breakdown into paid apps or revenue figures.

Yes. This is all bad news.

it's all great news

OT: good to hear the growth. Hope they can keep it up. Any specific info on win8 phones? Any new high end win8 phones revealed at CES?

Yes. This is all bad news.

I've only seen bad news (in context) so far. Sustained revenue and good profit figures, or sustained WinPhone8 market share, or any kind of hard numbers for Surface sales, or news of increased PC sales YoY would make me change my mind. Right now it feels like MS is playing the PR game to hide all of those things, because they are bad.

Honestly Windows 8 isn't even that much of an upgrade over Windows 7. All I have noticed is the slightly annoying tiles you get in the beggining of starting up your computer. But Windows 8 isn't a failure or bad just because it isn't selling as fast as Windows 7 otherwise if that was the case then I guess you could say the the PS3 is a colosal failure and don't even get me started on the software sales compared to PS2.

Good, windows 8 works like a charm. If only the haters would test it out before being negative...

Unquestionably. Windows 8 is falling behind Vista in the same time frame (last I checked)

Where did you check. Either you can't read it properly (i realise english isnt your first language) or the report was wrong. It's wayyyyy ahead of vista.

Get ready for incredible financials. Should make profits this quarter of what? Er... roughlyyyyy..... what Sony has made in the last 12 years?

Lol, epic.

OT: Good stuff. It's an entirely new OS, so I wasn't expecting astronomical sales straight away. It takes time for consumers to adjust their buying habits to change.

This is disasterous and not video-games!
