Ok here is my two cents....
Reasons to believe in the coming Next Gen Apocalypse
- Last of Us, a game that would do perfect in the 2013 Christmas Season is releasing in May.
- Grand Theft Auto V, with nothing slated for the Christmas Season as one would have assumed GTA was releasing in it and everyone was just evading it like they do COD. Not the case as GTA is coming in March
- PS Vita was announced at GDC 2 years ago. GDC is not the usual spot for this sort of thing yet Sony was determined to get their system out pronto as 3DS's arrival was imminant. Vita released that following Christmas in Japan. It would have been WW if not for the Tsunami wiping out many of Sony's production factories.
- MS has been pulling away it seems from 360 for the last few years now. It feels fairly similar to how they basically abandonned XBOX in it's final years to get 360 the push it needed out the door.
- Destination Playstation: coming clear out of nowhere. This event has not been seen in years. Sony has some pretty big stuff on the way with Last of Us, Beyond, Last Guardian, FF Versus XIII(?), and plenty of PS3 and Vita games to go through yet this still feels odd that they are choosing to have this event now, instead of waiting for E3. This can mean either 2 things. Sony is once again doing a blow out of all their best stuff BEFORE E3 because they will have more important things to discuss during that time (PS4), or it is to make sure the device is in consumer minds in enough time for this Holiday.
- Sony has made it clear they will never let MS get that year head start on them ever again, and MS will assuredly not want to be too far behind whatever Sony does. If MS if releasing this year, so will Sony. If they do release in 2014(still highly likely) then it will be Q2 release at the latest.
What Sony will eventually be bringing to the Table
Sony has quite a few great ideas on the table, and my bets that this is Sony's road map....
+PS4 will be called Orbis/Omni (Pray to god they choose Orbis). The name will be symbolic of Sony's general plan for the console. Similar to Vita, they want their devices to become the new center of your everyday routine. Like someone has stated before Vita Orbis makes them "The Circle of Life" when combined together.
+The system will have somewhere around 8GB of ram. Many are mistaking this for some sort of technicallity for their Dev Kits. I say Nay. The actual console will sport 8GB of RAM so it can efficiently complete several tasks similtaneously. IGN's reporters have stated that Devs who currently have early builds of the console say the same. The console's main interface is similar to what the new PS store is now. The console allows you to access the home menu options at anytime and you can pull up Web Browsers/PS Store/Download all at the same time with few issues.
+ Graphically it will be competent, yet not sure they will be pushing any limits this time. I think they are concentrating far more on performance power, and will make up for graphics with their 1st Party's unrivaled technique. I am told they are using that new Graphic Card/CPU hybrid just as MS supposedly is. Other rumours are leaning that Sony actually has a proprietary seperate GPU they will be implementing as their trojan horse against whatever MS is doing. Better yet, they might be making it possible to expand the graphics card as time goes on. This has been talked about for generations, Sony does seem pretty adamant about their "10 Year Life Cycles" and that will assuredly be the way to do it.
+Controller Wise, Dualshock will return.....yet with a new coat of paint. The Move willl finally be joined with DS in perfect harmony, with the split apart DS controller. Sony obviously wished they could have efficiently made that kind of controller for their Motion gaming yet it just wasn't ready to be implemented yet and they wanted to use assets they already had in play to make money back(IE: The Eye). Not sure what tech they will use for this controller, I am told they have some very sophisticated tracking tech on lock via copyright.
+The new Gimmick: The Orbis will assuredly still use BluRay. In every previous PS generation Sony has gradually upgraded what the previous console could do, usually via disc format. Yet seeing as the potential of BR was barely even touched this gen due to the way the era paced itself, it is still perfectly viable. The only upgrade to that will probably be lens read speeds which can truly make the performance like night and day from PS3. So what will the new catch for the console be? Well besides generally being able to pull of complex situations similtaneously, seamlessly connect with Vita for stationary and on the go enjoyment, the new console will take us into 4D gaming. Motion controlls have already been cannonized by the success of the Wii, 3D has shakingly been implemented but Sony will want to fully persue that almost tangible touch experience. The rumoured visor will be that for them. This glass overlay will highten HUD applications in gaming, enhance motion control gaming to give a better impression of being in the game, etc. Sony has been experimenting with these for years now. First it was the 3D TVs, then the 3D Visor, then Sony actually created the Holographic 3D display. This is the next commercially viable step.
+Connectivity: Sony has taken their Online Game to the next level in the last year. Come next gen, there can be no excuses for MS to why their service is supposedly better, as Sony will have the power to pull off the few shortcommings it had this gen. Standard Custom Soundtracks, Cross Game chat, etc. We have already seen these perfectly implemented with the Vita. PS Plus will prove that gaming Playstation is just better. With an assortment of this gen stuff for free, it gives gamers an instant gaming collection. I am thinking Sony will show this off from the start. Possibly allowing those who sign up to get one of the AAA release titles right off the bat for Orbis. This proved very popular when done for the Vita. Cloud Gaming, Sony will have have the tech to give every gamer access to their entire game library from any location. Currently, every Vita title is available as DD and retail(where app.). With Orbis, every game at retail will be available as DD AND in the cloud. A really cool concept might be if you get the Retail version, the Cloud version is yours as well. What this means is access to your game library anywhere. This feature will probably be reserved for PS Plus members only, just as the auto updates are. I imagine the price of the Plus might increase, or charge method will change. Possibly become a monthly fee. Rumours of console manufactures subsidising the console price with subscription plans sounds possible.
-I am thinking Sony WILL and SHOULD implement their anti Piracy tech into the Orbis. A few groups of people say they will not buy a PS4 if it does. Here is the reality of it.... If you buy your games new, then this doesn't even affect you at all. If you buy your games used all the time then you are the reason gaming companies aren't making enough money from their products these days. Knowing that most consoles are sold at a loss, if they don't make money back from the games then your customer loyalty was a moot point anyway. And this still might not mean the game is completely cut off from a second hand buyer. Sony laid patent down for Demoing tech a few years ago that allows them to make demo versions of just about any game. They mind restrict time allowed to enjoy a game if bought second hand, unless you purchase the "Pass" just as they are doing for many now. Consumers might hate this.....Developers will LOVE it.
+The Center of your Universe: The Orbis will at some point implement the Sony Channel. We all could see this happening for the HD twins the last few years. It has been an arms race to collect as many different TV services as possible. Sony supposedly wants to start their own of sorts. Possibly getting a deal that allows them to show specifict channel programming on Orbis for a fee. I would love it if I can get Netflix/Hulu/and whatever else is out there rolled up into one box for a decent fee. They want to anex the standard Cable and Dish market which they are already doing. Streaming on Demand is the way to go. I imagine they will fully have the DVR feature the UK currently supports.
-Backwards Compatibility: Just like the Vita, it will only be BC with digital titles. This should keep the sales of PS3(which is profit now) going even after Orbis's release, just like PS2. They might introduce some way of recovering your library via the Cloud and only if you are a PS Plus member which I could live with.
-PS Plus becomes a teired service. PS+($60 a year for continued service of what we are already currently getting) and PS++($7.99 a month which adds Cloud gaming service, BC with PS3 title library, subsidized console price).
+Price: my guess? $400-500 range. Most likely 2-3 models. 399 for just the console. 499 for console plus the Visor. I am thinking a 349 bundle with the system, Visor head mount, and 1 game, but required subscription to PS Plus for one to two years. Games will remain at $60 maximum for anything more will be suicide in the US. The Hard Drives will be standard yet proprietary upgrades, as this is Sony we are talking about. I imagine 40/60/120GB for the different SKUs, the last will probably only be available for upgrade seperately. If the upgradable Graphics Card is to be true, they will probably have one currently standard, later on they will introduce the GC upgrade to extend the console's longevity.
