Forums - Sales - It has begun - Wii U is doomed.

How will consoles sell during Christmas 2013?

PS360 will dominate 96 18.50%

Wii U and Nintendo own that time of year 229 44.12%

PS4 will be king, if not,... 66 12.72%

Nexbox will be king, if n... 49 9.44%

Not sure, but Wii U is doomed. 79 15.22%

A kick ass Metroid from Retro Studios in 2013 while the new consoles come out is insanity!!! Too bad i cannot put my hopes up.

Eh. I dunno if the Wii U will be a success or failure. Frankly I can't begin to care. It has nothing to offer me, thus failure or success has little impact on me other than the possibility of limiting resources to mediums I do care about. I say mediums rather than games or consoles because at this point it is not only the genre (RPG mostly) that I care about but also the input method of said genre. I refute wholeheartedly the complete bullshit that is motion control and any said RPG that uses such is plebeian crap such that I can but barely even acknowledged its existence. So, my position is that if others like it fine, I just hope that these games that I like are created on consoles that I can at least use _traditional_ controls.

That is all.

You can use traditional controls on the Wii U. Plus it is very likely that it dominate Japan and get many decent JRPGs. So what do you say now, still don't care, because of an obvious bias?

For an additional price.

Gamepad is a traditional controller with a touchscreen no?

Not really. Look at its size and horrible battery life. That touchscreen is extremely distracting to the user and if it isnt' being used in a game, then it is unnecessary. But I'm not complaining though. I know Wii U isn't for me and I have my PS3 for traditional controls.(and PS4 in the future)

Eh... with regards to the "additional price," Wii U + Pro Controller will probably still cost less than a PS4.

Basic model + pro controller = $350, deluxe model + pro controller = $400.

The Wii U isn't doomed. Die hard Nintendo fans seem to be extremely resilient to disappointment and Nintendo still has its family friendly name, so it's got that going for it when kids as for a video game console but don't want a portable.

The worst that will happen to the Wii U is it'll have lack of third party support, but that's happened three console generations in a row. Or the Wii U will sell as much as the Gamecube, which still profited, just was Nintendo's worst selling console.

There's too much emphasis placed on the Christmas season. Almost every platform except the Vita does well over November/December.

Jan-October is where the real story is told IMO. 720/PS4 are likely to be extremely supply limited next fall anyway.

That's not necessarily true. 3DS had Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 for its first holiday season...and then New Super Mario Bros 2 and Paper Mario for its second, with no other major releases for the holidays.

I agree with you, I feel something big other then Mario will be announced (Most likely a Metroid game from Retro Studios, or Smash Bros.), but there could just as easily be just another Mario game.

That's because Wii U was coming out, Nintendo is not crazy like Sony who always seems to cannibolise its own software and hardware sales. I think Nintendo actively killed the Wii and I belive also the DS, so that they don't compete with 3DS and WiiU. Now that Wii U has launched expect that Nintendo will alternate significant software releases between 3DS and Wii U for 2013. It would have silly for nintendo to have release any big titles for 3DS during Wii U launch, or made any other significant moves like bundles, or price drops for 3DS during that time. However, I expect such in 2013, a more agressive Nintendo.

Sony cannibolizes their own software and hardware sales? Explain that to me.

I doubt that Nintendo killed its own system, if they were planning on that, why release a Wii mini for $100 right when the WiiU released?

I agree Nintendo didn't push the 3DS outside of Japan during the WiiU launch (in Japan they released Animal Crossing, which is now the best selling 3DS game there), and I agree Nintendo will be much more agressive on both fronts in 2013, but this doesn't mean that there won't be a new Mario for 2013. 3DS already has 2 Mario platformers, Kart, and a RPG, it's unlikely that Nintendo will release anything Mario for the 3DS in 2013. However its very possible that Nintendo makes a 3D Mario Platformer, or at the very least a Mario Spinoff game (Like Mario Paty) for 2013.

I'm only arguing that it's also possible that Mario will be the only WiiU game for fall 2013. I doubt it, I bet you there will be a simultanious Smash Bros announcement at E3, and maybe something from Retro Studios for fall 2013, but it's possible.

PSP v Vita = cannibolize. I expect that Sony and MS will run into the same problem as PS360 will eat into PS720 sales.

Wii mini, that thing was released in Canada with zero marketing and just 1 pic. The fact is nintendo has stopped making significant games for Wii.

Animal Crossing in Japan, OK, but that was still almost a whole month before Wii U in Japan I think. Plus, they had to keep the pressure on Vita's, so they had to release something.

Hmm, OK Mario could be in 3D like Mario Sunshine or Galaxy, I agree, but I hope Nintendo has reliased that the Plumber needs a bit of a break.

Here's hoping that we finally see what Retro is up.

Oh I see what you mean, but I don't necessarily agree. Didn't the PS2 still sell 50 million more units after the PS3 released? It's still selling pretty decently in fact, about as good as DS. If anything Nintendo cannibolizes their consoles sales. Pikmin 3 was suppose to be a Wii game for the longest time, and I even bought my Wii for it, but they changed their mind as soon as they started working on the WiiU. Plus NoA didn't even localize two of it's bigger late gen games (The Last Story and Pandora's Tower). Yes DS got Pokemon Black/White 2, but that was Gamefreaks doing, not Nintendo (higher sales if released on the DS).

Wii Mini might not be limited to Canada, could have been production limitations. It's a really cool looking system, in Best Buys and Gamestops in Canada stores are lined with just as many Wii Mini's as WiiU's.

It might not be just a 3D Mario Platformer, Mario Kart is a very likely game, or maybe a Mario Party. In fact, I would be surprised if we didn't see one Mario game this fall for the WiiU. I doubt Mario will be the only game, and I bet whatever Mario game we see will be a spinoff (like Mario Party) instead of anything else, but I bet we will get something Mario on WiiU. Luigi on 3DS.

Funny how this thread starts off with "WiiU is doomed" and now is full of comments like "I can't wait to see the software for WiiU in fall 2013."

The Wii U will be doomed for about a year until the ps4 comes out. Im going to go by assumptions since this is what most haters do. Wii U will sell more in its first year than ps4 and 720 in their first year. Ps4 will sell like the ps vita but a bit more. Mark my words.

Bet with ninjablade:

Ninjablade wins if the next 5 multiplat on the wii u are inferior to the 360 version.

I win if one of the 5 mulitplats are on par or superior on the Wii U.

I think there is a large disruption in the status quo coming this year with the new console offering from steam. It will target "hardcore" gamers and provide real competition especially on software prices. The core Nintendo audience is likely to be least affected by this disruption. That and Nintendo has already undergone the major transition hurdles, R&D expenditures, sales losses after announcing a new console, etc... 2013 should be just fine for them.

0.8x Wii sales= success. To expect sales greater than 0.8 times the last gen is to ignore the protracted global economic malaise and European crisis. Products are not sold in a vacuum.

As much as i disagree with Pratchet predictions, the smartphone and tablet have taken away a lot of the same purchasing space that consoles occupied in 2006. For example your kid wants console x and tablet y for Christmas but your disposable income is reduced from 2006, both have similar price points and are entertainment devices. Fewer people will choose both x & y given reduced purchasing power, hence why any console that does 0.8 times last gen sales is doing just fine.

Wii U wont be Doomed, not sure how good the mutiplat support will be for it once Sony and Ms set there new beasties of the chain but.
