I thought we had come to the agreement on this site that a product selling better right NOW meant it was king and that past sales and total sales dont matter anymore... At least a number of Sony fans have been preaching this all week.

So that's where Sales2099 got that. Always wondered. Doesn't make sense coming from a Sony fan, doesn't make sense coming from a Microsoft fan, and doesn't make sense coming from a Nintendo fan. It simply does not make sense. lol

I don't know why but a number of Sony fans started using the reasoning that because the PS3 is selling better than the Wii or 360 for the last few years, it has won the gen (despite the huge deficit to the Wii lol).  Its bonkers, yet the arguments get reversed when they don't suit them.  There's nothing more annoying that hypocrysy.  I think Sales picks on GT5 because a lot of the manic pro Sony camp hailed it as the second coming giving it the sort of hype in quality and sales that no game could realistically achieve.  Let's be honest, the sales figures are still amazing for a driving game regardless.

Halo 4 has most likely already made more money than GT5. The majority of copies sold were at the original $60 price. I'd guess that 1 million copies were sold when the game had a temporary price drop for a few weeks. And remember, that the price drop was only for a few markets and not world wide.
GT5 on the other hand had 5.7 million copies sold in its 3 months on sale. Then after that, 3.3 million copies were sold at lower prices (since it was a year old) or mainly through being bundled with the PS3, (Sony doesn't make money from that).

Hate to sound like a broken record, but If it were GT5 that sold more in 7 weeks than Halo 4 sold in its first year then we would never hear the end of it and quite possibly have around 20 threads of bragging rights.

Sales2099 didn't join this site until mid 2011, months after GT5 released, so...yeah.

That hype was on every site Jay but you can pretend nobody thought it would sell or review well if you like.

"You know that nowhere in my post did it say sales alone are not an accomplishment"

okay

"Halo 4 burning through copies quicker than GT5 at launch is some sort of accomplishment. It isn't."

Because this totally doesn't imply that. You've said Halo 4 selling more at launch than GT5 isn't an accomplishment, correct? Back to the original post I replied to, you implied that Halo is selling better than GT because Shooters are mainstream this gen. I argued that Halo was always selling even when RPGs were mainstream. I also made the point that Killzone (and many shooters may I add) should've sold better by that logic. You then sidestep by switching the argument saying it was too soon to compare. I said there's nothing wrong with comparing games that are in the process of selling (I mean this is a sales site). But hey guess I fail at reading comprehension. :)

Again.. are you actually reading the posts? It's not hard. Halo 4 sold nearly 4 million copies in week one. Looking purely at sales, that's mighty impressive. Comparing it to sales of a sim racer like GT5.. yawn. That's not impressive. Nowhere did I say Halo 4's sales are not impressive. I said outselling GT5's pace is not impressive. They are two separate things.

Regarding Killzone, who gives a **** about Killzone?  Are you comparing the market power of Halo to Killzone? Are you denying that shooters are more popular than sim racers? I mentioned shooters because Halo 4 is, in fact, a shooter. Nowhere did I imply that every single shooter should sell 9 million copies.

Your guess seems spot on.

You don't see GT as a anomoly of its genre? A notable exception? In the end, both are compared because they are each the #1 IP for their respective console.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

You can consider it an anomaly but that doesn't change the fact that throughout its history it has been a franchise that sells for years. So it's still a meaningless comparison.

So a mega popular FPS like Halo 4 got off to a much faster start. Who cares. When this gen is over, GT5 will still outsell it.

What if Halo 4 is bundled this year? What if Halo 4 gets a graphical re-release on next Xbox? Im leaning more towards a spring and fall bundle. Its really only 1.7 million behind GT5. Itll still sell at a faster pace due to being more new from the early months in the year. Its quite possible.
