Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Surpasses 2 Million Sales

A little over 3 million in 3 months? Its definitely possible, as long as they can maintain momentum past the holiday season. Unfortunately, I feel that they'll miss their predictions again, if only by a bit. It seems to be a trend with Nintendo lately.

Microsoft pulled a million consoles on one black friday a year or two ago when the Kinect was hugely popular, it could happen for Nintendo.

Not bad! This exceeds all home console releases with the exception of Wii.

Although, I think that many were expecting this one to be a record breaker. I think the console can do much better with the right kind of push.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Oh I'm not saying it can't, and I hope they do make it. Its just that Nintendo has been missing a lot of their numbers lately, so there's always the possibility that they overestimated themselves again.

Despite having a better launch by the numbers than PS3 and Xbox 360 people are still calling it a failure, so hitting their estimated numbers wouldn't really matter anyway.

No, it is not a failure because it didnt hit those numbers. It did well and the Nintendo faithful stayed true to the system look at the attach rate of the games. Theres no way the casuals were involved in the majority of those sales. The failure is that Nintendo alienated the non-gamers who used the Wii and don't give a crap about their touch pad for gaming. Nintendo says they are trying to fight multiple battles including one with Apple phones and Android. It will come back to haunt them because they wont replicate the numebers or demand. As I said the numbers are high right now because of the Nintendo faithful.

I agree that fighting multiple battles can come back to really hurt Nintendo, considering they aren't that large of a company and can't stretch themselves too far (Though the 2013 restructuring and expansion of the company would probably help things). I wouldn't say they have alienated anyone yet, however. The Wii U still uses motion controls and will still get Wii Remote-focused games, as well as GamePad-focused ones. There's also the chance that Nintendo will carve out its own niche of 2nd/3rd-party support to keep gamers from each category interested. If sales do start to slip however, I'd sooner blame the horrible advertising Nintendo has been doing for the system instead of actual lack of interest. Most of the ads I've seen don't try to separate the console from the Wii as a brand new console, which I'm sure led to confusion over the last few months.

Either way, it's only been a month since the system was out in all regions, so everything is still up in the air. I doubt the Wii U will be able to match the Wii's success, but I think it will be able to gather a fairly large userbase similar to the 360/PS3 if they can fix their marketing and get decent 2nd/3rd-party support.

I see it having above Gamecube numbers (45-50 M at best). We'll see because this gen wont last but five years.

Ah yeah, I didn't consider that. I can see it matching/exceeding SNES numbers then (49.1m). I'm actually hoping this gen doesn't last too long either, things have really seemed to stagnate within the last year or two because of the extended length of this gen.

Yep, the economy hit everyone hard.

I don't see how 2.2 million sales means "failure." If anything, it's the opposite. Doing so in four weeks is quite solid. I would like to see what Nintendo has in store for WiiU this year, though.
