Forums - Sony - Can someone explain why people thought that Playstation All-Stars would sell millions of copies?

I don't believe you. You haven't seen the ad with the fat princess sat on the toilet?  I've seen that dozens of times. Garbage ad I grant you, but it has been shown a lot.

Wait.  You've seen that advert in the UK, over the past month or so?  Now I can safely say that I don't believe you.

The only reason I knew that advert existed is because someone posted the Russian version in the Vita thread. I was actively expecting it to materialise in english, but I never saw it even once.  No word of a lie.

So I'm having trouble believing it was even advertised over here, let alone advertised "a lot".  I'll concede that the chances are the did use that advert for the UK, but if they did, I don't know what channel they showed it on but it certainly wasn't any of the 7-8 channels with adverts that I watch.

Seems Brendude didn't see it either, so it's not just me!

Sorry, but you are flat out wrong.

7 or 8 chanels with ads? Do you only have "council" TV or something. lol

Seen that ad lots of times. Its a common ad.

Now you are even saying it wasnt used at all. lol.

watch it... it might remind you

I was actually waiting to see ads for it, didn't see a single one. I've seen the PS Vita / Black Ops: Declassified one about a hundred times, but not this one.

What channels was it shown on?

Around the Network

I never saw an advert for PSASBR in the UK once, tons for Wonderbook though.

Oh and I think it totally will sell a million. I mean even if you don't count digital download copies it's on two freaking systems... and probably at some point will be bundled.

I mean... it will probably have to drag itself there with one hand... but I can't see it not making it unless the game is somehow over tracked.

I think sony go for a higher demographic with their ads.  Most advertising is targetted.  Sky sports, some of the "youth" channels that my daughter watches, etc etc.

So I have seen it quote a lot.

You have basically said I dont watch much TV and havent seen this ad... well that kinda figures doesnt it.

I said I don't watch many channels.  Not that I don't watch much TV.  I could list all the channels with adverts that I watch, if you want, and we can compare them with the channels that you/your daughter watch that you were seeing these ads on "a lot".  But I find it hard to believe that Sony would buy ad time for Vita/Wonderbook on Channel 4/E4/5*/Dave, and then target a completely different demographic with Playstation-All Stars.

Brendude and apparently now Degausser haven't seen a single advert in the UK either, apparently, so we're definitely not in the minority here.

Personally, I still think it would be a great game for a bundle, especially in a two/multiple game bundle. It's a good game for families and putting it in a bundle or on PS+ would be a good way to build the franchise fanbase for the future. It would also be a way to promote the Vita by giving PS3 owners a Vita game for free. From the beginning, I said that I thought Sony had modest expectations for this game, but bigger hopes for the franchise.

Ultimately, sales for this game are going to be cut short by the arrival of the PS4. This is a title that would normally sell more by word of mouth or indirect advertising than by direct advertising--in other words, it would have legs--but the timing of the release will likely cut that short.

My belief has always been that Sony created this game, not necessarily for individual sales, but to be another feature of the Playstation brand. It's there to fill a niche. I think it will one day become a PS+ mainstay.

What kind of annoys me when I read threads like this is that, for some reason, none of the fans of other consoles ever reference my opinion or the opinions of others who didn't say anything outlandish. You never read, "lol playstations fans have modest expectations for this game." Instead, it's always something like, "lol playstation fans thought this game would sell 20m lololol." I mean, wait? The hell? Twenty people can say 1m but if a couple of people say 20m then THEY are the ones that get quoted as representatives of everyone who games on a particular device? It's really hard to take anyone seriously who uses extremes to create gross generalizations. Yes, you're going to get under the skin of the ignorant, but people with intelligence will be face-palming at you.

without generalising how else would he get to attack the sony fanbase?

i don't really think anyone here believes he made this thread for any other reason

edit : he didn't, for example, make a thread on why people were predicting the wii u would sell over 4 mil as kitler said and given the gaming company he choses to align himself with i'm not surpirsed

I think that's just a lack of knowledge on the poster.  Richardhutnik is many things, but he doesn't actually dislike any company.  He DOES however make his own boardgames and such and therefore is particularly interested in why things sell and don't sell.

As for the Wii U.  That's just a boring ass thread because all it boils down to is "There was never enough supply at launch."  So "overestimated supply" is about as far as you'd get in that thread.

Some people thought SONY would actually advertise this thing. Some just never learn.

This.

saw plenty of ads during november and december, they stoped after jesus day

That's the thing... a lot of people don't think there are advertising for these games just because they don't tend to watch the kind of programming videogame developers advertise on.

Spike TV, Sports games... that's where 360 and  Sony target.   Reason is, they're trying to reach the "Bro Gamer".   Cause all the internet fans... already know about this game from the internet.  What do you or I need advertisements for?

Of course the problem is... to the "Bro Gamer" this kind of mascot brawler really holds little interest.  Since they probably loved Uncharted but don't even really remember Nathan Drake's name.  If anythin a more serious type Mascot brawler would likely sell better... ala Mortal Kombat vs DC.

that proves it then.

I'm glad we finally agree.

Yep you've convinved me... I never actually saw it those 10 to a dozen times.

I don't believe you did either.  Took some convincing, but we got you there.

Ok, enough bickering about how much advertising there was or wasn't. I'm sure the advertising budget will come out at some point in time... and besides, there are people without agendas(or even reversed agendas) who actually saw plenty of advertising.

Chances are, you just weren't watching the right channels at the right times. That's how advertising works.

oh hang on, just asked my daughter, she rembers it too. so now its 3v2.  hmmm?

Oh noes, WHATEVER WILL WE DO!?

In all seriousness though, enough, Kowen.  Over the holidays, I watched a lot of TV on ITV1/C4/C5, ITV2/E4/5*, Sky Sports News/Challenge/Dave.  These channels were absolutely littered with adverts for Vita, Wonderbook & "family fun" (as in, at least 1 for each per ad-break) and I did not see PSABR advert a single time.  Not even once.

If you watched different channels to these with your daughter, and it was shown "a lot", then whatever, I believe you.  I find it strange that Sony would target the demographic who watch the same channels as me with all their adverts except one, but there you go.
