Forums - General - Anyone ever feel like you need to act like a thug to have a conversation with poor people?

Isn't this why we post on the internet?

For the most part, poor Americans are poor as a result of poor work ethic, which usually correlates in a poor personality. So I'm not surprised. I've interacted with a lot of poor people in my days. About 99% of the adult poor people I've examined just don't put forth the effort to better themselves. They take little to no responsibility for their future and constantly blame the system and other "irresistible forces" for their shitty condition. While societal factors can give someone a bad upbringing, people have abundant opportunity to do something with their life and make a decent living. If it isn't laziness, its often just plain indifference when it comes to poor people; they seem complacent with their lifestyle and don't care to even try to improve themselves.

Keep in kind these are my just observations of poor people based on my short life in Detroit, Michigan. Much of my family is poor (many depend in government assistance just to get by), so I think I have decent experience here. Seeing as how Detroit is one of America's worst cities, I wouldn't be surprised if poor people in other cities actually had more opportunity than the people I've interacted with.

I'm confused. Haven't you argued that people are entirely products of their environment and heredity, and therefore the decisions they make are the only decisions they could ever have made? Or have you changed your opinion on free will?

yea i think you're right, you might just be wired differently

I have always been poor, and I can talk to anyone really. Although I think it more depends on area more then anything. Like I never have lived in a city with more then 50000 population.

My view is complicated and I don't know if I can articulate it clearly. I believe poor people are poor because of their personality, but that's not necessarily the fault of the person. If that makes sense.

But there's a pretty big difference between an abundance of opportunity and merely the illusion of abundance, which is what it would be if they don't possess free will. The opportunity might as well not exist if they don't have the capacity to actually exploit it.

please you are on the internet you are not poor like the real poor out there.

Define poor.
