Forums - General - Anyone ever feel like you need to act like a thug to have a conversation with poor people?

It's difficult to explain. Let me think on how to explain it clearly.

"It's their personality's fault that they're poor, but they're not at fault for their personality", maybe?

I know lots of educated poor people, almost all of them graduate students who can talk your ear off an any given topic... intelligently. They also work 60 to 80 hour weeks to bring in less money than someone serving coffee in a doughnut shop part time. Poverty does not equal lazy does not equal dumb.

Im sure their degree in 17th century southern french literature will save them from poverty

lol dude I do the exact same thing. I always put on a slightly chavy accent and use more slang with some people. I swear a lot anyway so that doesn't change, only not in front of my mum.

I know a woman who came from (one of) the lowest castes in India, from a family that didn't have adequate shelter and regularly went without food, and is now a well educated software developer, earns a good living, and is supporting her family back home. The challenges she faced, and her parents faced, are unimaginable and make the "trials" of the poor in western developed nations laughable.

But my ipod's screen is scratched.

I know what you mean, it's pretty annoying isn't it? I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but am fairly intelligent...and I hate dumbing myself down to talk to people.

First you have to define poor, there's many people with a higher intelligence that are worse of then someone who lives an expensive life style. For me it mainly comes down to environment rather than social class regardless of someone social status each have their own select groups. It's easy to dub rich people as snobs but saying that there's quite as many middle class people with the same attitude. So it;s probably more due to the people you attract rather then the social classes them self.
