Forums - Sales - Japan sales: Famitsu & Media create

Combined with Monster Hunter, Luigi, and Shin Megami in the first half of next year, we can expect 3DS to have it's peak sales year in 2013, and I think it's safe to say at this point Nintendo has officially managed to turn 3DS into a worthy successor to DS.

My sincere congratulations to Nintendo, they did what most thought impossible in today's market. Definitely will be a profitable company again next year.

In the west they're literally killing it though. This Christmas could have been much better, but they left it with only Paper Mario, together with TPs which launched near to nothing.
In Japan it has a shot of selling at GB/DS levels (DQ XI needed though), but in the west only half the sales of DS are achievable with this attitude.

BTW, amazing sales for Animal Crossing, well deserved!

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

ModelSales volume
3DS LL 251,949
3DS 159,323
Wii U 122,843
PSP 65,859
PS3 47,626
Vita 21,266
Wii 13,049
Xbox 360 1,689
PS2 928
DSi 454
DSi LL 291

Combined, Nintendo hardware makes up for more than  80% of the Japanese video games market.  Does anyone have any historical info at their disposal to see if there's been another period where they've been so dominant?  Perhaps Wii/ DS peak in '07/'08?

This is a really old graph I've made some years ago. The 2010 numbers aren't correct (made in mid 2010) and the Sega numbers have been collected using shipped consoles instead of actual sales data but there you go. I should make a new one maybe...

That is a really nice graph UncleScrooge.

So this 80% marketshare has no precedent.

WOW @ 3DS sales, Wii U could be better.

everything down from last year, still impressive none the less for the 3DS.
2013 vita needs to do better, its comps are there for the taking.

Platform Weekly (change) Total (week before Christmas Japan 2011)
3DS 497,223 (+34%) 4,112,037
PSP 99,440 (+55%) 18,542,736
Wii 89,513 (+48%) 12,180,272
PS3 74,792 (+17%) 7,596,395
PSV 74,104 (-77%) 396,592
DS 14,489 (+60%) 32,907,765
X360 4,075 (+28%) 1,555,715

Week 51 2011 was Dec 19 - Dec 25 while week 51 2012 leaves out Christmas and the day before Christmas.  Not sure how much last minute shopping there would be in JP but the weekly comparisons might be skewed.

Famitsu is tracking download cards afaik, Media Create doesn't. Neither are tracking direct eShop purchases (how could they?).

Everything poor excpet 3DS. Every game below NSMB2 is doomed, because NSMB2 itself is a failure of a game that is doomed.

This is also true for every console and handheld that has digital sales and vouchers for games (i.e. every other console on the market).

I may have low expectations, but I come away impressed with PS3. I know its down YoY, but that's to be expected as it comes to the end of its life, right?

Since the successor to the PS3 hasn't been announced in any way I don't see why people should hold off from buying a PS3. The market isn't saturated at 8.8 million units sold either, as handheld numbers suggest. People claim the PS3 has just as much power as the Wii U has, it has a huge library of games and is cheaper. I don't see how the PS3 numbers are impressive under those circumstances.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Whats Fantasy life? O.o

From level 5... but never heard of it.

It seems like it's kind of Level 5's version of Animal Crossing, somewhat.

Thank you. It looks more interesting to me personally than Animal crossing (im not a fan), but its not my kind of game. Hope your gf enjoys it. It looks nice.
