Rumors are flying everywhere now about the next generation of consoles.   We know they're close and are even starting to get some reliable rumors about what they'll be running inside the hardware. 

One of the more interesting rumors is that Sony will not be calling their next gen console the Playstation 4.  In fact some of the rumors have stated that Playstation won't be in the name at all.

Isthis a good choice?   Is it time for Sony to rebrand their gaming division?  Or would it be a huge mistake to abandon a brand name that well known.  We've seen rebranding can work great sometime such as with the Wii.

Nintendo is the brand itself and the part that sells the Wii. A lot of casuals don't even pay attention to the name of the console, they just call it a 'Nintendo'. The same with Playstation, though to a lesser extent, as Sony's target demographic is often more technologically savvy, generally speaking. Dropping 'Playstation' would be a mistake.

I don´t think Sony should drop the Playstation brand. It took them 18 years to build it up, now pretty much everyone knows what a Playstation is. Would be foolish to drop the name now. Additionally there is no confusion among the customers what a Playstation 1/2/3/(4) is, they also would give this bonus up.

PlayStation brand name is too strong Worldwide for them to abandon it. ~400 Million consoles sold and over 3 Billion games on PS consoles in less than 20 Years.

Rumors are that it wont be PlayStation 4, though. Due to 4 having something to do with death in Japan. My guess is JP will have a name of say, "PS Orbis" and everywhere else will continue with "PS4"

Would make sense,  just like Famicom/NES. The numeration of the home consoles is too good to just drop it for Japan.

The Playstation name needs to stay. All they should do if anything is drop the number for this coming gen and just simply call it the Playstation.

Drop the 4 if they want. I wouldn't, but it's their choice.

But "Playstation" is the brand much more than anything else. It'd be starting from scratch otherwise.
