Too many Wii U defenders. Console is dated. They fooled us with a gimmick once, but never again. Sales will reflect that.

Why is the 3DS outselling the Vita? Nintendo fooled the people once with the DS, Why are they fooling the people again?

My point was that Motion control (while revolutionary) was a gimmick. I can't speak on behalf of others, but after buying my Ps3 I never touched my Wii again.

Now with Wii U, they have a 2nd screen gimmick. It's a cool concept and all, but a gimmick nonetheless.

What gimmick are you suggesting the DS had?

The dual screens for the DS and the 3D and dual screen setup for the 3DS, you said it yourself.   Also both the DS and the 3DS were dated hardware at launch. You say that reason that the Wii U is being outsold by the other systems is because the console is dated and the gimmick is not fooling anyone. I say it is normal process in the early days of a new hardware. If it was normal for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 to be outsold by the PS2 and GBA it should be normal for the Wii U to be outsold by the PS360 at this time.

I don't particularly believe the two screens drew people to the DS, but I can't really argue if you believe it did. 3D I could consider a gimmick.

Ps3 $600

Xbox360 $400

Ps2 $99

Of course it will outsell those consoles for a while. Wii U should be obliterating sales of last generation systems with similar price.

Arguing with nintendo fans is like pulling teeth lol, contradictions and headaches. "It's not a gimmick, it has motion controls." "It's a game console and only needs to play games NOT dvds or blurays, but it has all these netflix and tvii and apps so it's a media hub as well."

Pick a story and stick with it lol.

Super Mario Bros. U, which has sold LESS THAN 1million copies, is your definition of "Killer App."

LOL.

I have to laugh lol....no offense but if you're going to "attempt"to make a point, even if you use statistics, you're going to have to actually MAKE A POINT using those statistics lol. It's so funny because you just posted a bunch of numbers, having nothing to do with wiiu, as if you accomplished something haha.

A game that sells under 1 million copies is a killer app, and that's why everyone should buy a wiiu? Try harder haha. Too Funny..

Well, it is in it's first weeks, while the others sold over years. The install-base of the platform it released on is 1.8 million, but you say it is a flop because it didn't sell 10 million or what.

I could play the game too: if you compare the attach rate of NSMB on Wii, DS, 3DS and WiiU then it is clear NSMBU will sell 30 million.

Yep, the sales will always be below 1m.  Let us forget about the user base just getting started and that it has barely been on the market.  The point is that NSMB series has outsold both of your two killer apps series.  NSMB is as big of a console seller as Halo.  I don't even considering Uncharted a true console seller.

"In marketing language, a gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. However, the special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use.  Thus, a gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimmick

Yep, motion control was a gimmick because it had little relevance/use.  Forget all the old people and non gamers that actually could play on a home video game console again without being ass raped by a shitload of buttons.  Wii U gamepad ability to play certain games, stream Netflix, etc on just the gamepad while others use the TV is a gimmick.  Who on earth would ever run into a situation in benefiting from that?  Keep using the word gimmick because you don't have a valid argument.

I did also use the term revolutionary, but just ignore that aspect of my post in order to better suit your argument. lmfao

Do you have a PC or laptop or tablet or phone? Can you not stream netflix on those devices? It's a gimmick. You're a sucker.

My desktop PC isn't in my bed.  Nintendo doesn't publish games on the PC,phones, or tablets.  I don't have an android phone anymore nor any tablet.

Yep, keep dodging the point. You're good at that.

PS: WTH does android have to do with Netflix? You realize it's on iOS right?

I've been seeing people here and on other sites citing how the Wii U is still selling below other consoles as proof that it's not going to do well. Wanting to confirm whether or not it sounded like the fanboy hyperbole it came off as, I went back and looked at some articles about sales around '06 and '07. I found some intriguing articles:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/71065-PS2-Sales-Hold-Strong-Drive-Sales-For-Q1-2007

"The PlayStation 2 sold 280,000 units in March, the final month of Q1 2007, more than doubling the 130,000 unit sales of the PlayStation 3, Sony's next-gen system. In fact, the PlayStation 2 handily outsold all of its next-gen brethren in March: Microsoft put out 199,000 Xbox 360 systems, while Nintendo sold 259,000 Wii consoles, although this number was cut short by supply shortages."

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/09/14/360_finally_overtakes_ps2_in_us_sales/1

"Microsoft's Xbox 360 had finally outsold Sony's Playstation 2. These numbers only account for one month but it's bound to make the Microsoft guys happy. Sony has trumpeted the fact that the PS2 has outsold the 360 ever since its launch."

Note that the second article was posted in September of '07--almost TWO YEARS after the 360 launched.

Look, I get it. I never bought a Wii. Right now, I'm content to wait for what MS and Sony are offering next year, and don't have any plans to buy a Wii U right now. But this nonsense about how "oh, the Wii U is selling less than current-gen consoles, its clearly fucked" is ridiculous. You can just look at the early years of this generation as proof that it doesn't mean anything in the long run. After all, people said the Wii being weaker would keep it from going anywhere, motion controls be damned, and look how that worked out.

If the numbers cited above are wrong, and you have proof, then post them and let me see. Otherwise, just let it go.

Comparing sales from 6+ years ago to today is ludicrous due to economic change as well as the surge of tech that has occured.

You are forgetting that the Wii U is DIRECTLY competing against the 360 and PS3 rather then truly being next gen as the games it offers are on par with the current generation. When the 360 was released, there was Forza 3 which clearly demonstrated the 360 as a superior console in terms of tech. Currently the Wii U has no such game, and with things like Cross Play, it really is hard to argue that the Wii U is not directly competing againt the 360 and PS3. That is why it's sales are being directly compared to the PS3 and 360 rather then looking at them independently.

Software sells hardware. Why buy a Wii U now when you can buy a PS3 or Xbox 360 for $100 - $150 less with a library of 6 years of great games and a lot of great games coming in 2013 like The Last of Us, God of War Ascencion, Gears of War and GTA V? As it was not fair to judge the systems mentioned in the OP for being outsold at launch, it is not fair for the Wii U. I hope you have this same stance if the PS4 is being outsold by the PS3 some weeks after launch. I really hope...
