Ten Reasons Why Going to the Moon Was the Most Badass Event in American History

Certainly, there are a lot of events that rank up there - the Signing of the Declaration of Independence (as well as the creation of it), and probably America's involvment in World War 2. But the Moon Landing was one of the few things that was pretty much an American event from start to finish.

What do you guys think?

BIGGEST CONSPIRACY EVAR

It's certainly impressive, but the most badass date in US history is easy...July 16th !945:

Making a weapon of such power that it a) stopped a hideous war and b) stopped many future wars is more significant then a few bros bouncing around on space rock.

Really now? Here's a direct quote from Lincoln.

""I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."

His goal of unifying the country was admirable, but he did (suspending habeas corpus to jail senators and media who disagreed with him) and said plenty of despicable things.

Yeah, as I said, everyone was still really racist. But one side of that war recognized that slavery was finished and the other did not. Tell me, if slavery was not an issue and was purely propoganda by the North, why were all of the Confederate states slave states, and why didn't the Confederacy likewise put an end to slavery?

One side didn't recognize it as finished as there were 4 slave states fighting for the Union. And if the Union thought slavery was finished, why did they wait till after the war to forbid slavery? The emancipation proclamation did not stop slavery in the 4 slave states or any of the terriotory that the Union had won back. Slavery was an issue, but it was not the main issue or catalyst for secession. I do believe that if the Civil War never existed and there were two separate countries, slavery would have ceased to exist. It would certainly not have come as early as the 13th Amendment did, but manufacturing would have crept down and and so would abolition.

I understand we're debating nuances of what is a great evil, but let's not paint the broad brush that you are.

Politics. There's really little room to be ideological when war is going on, and you certainly don't want to alienate more states than you have to.

It's hard to sort out what Lincoln's true views were, or if they truly changed in the course of the war. The likelier explanation is that he was either always in favor of freedom and integration for the slaves, but made his "send them back to Africa" comments before the war in an effort to not appear too radical, or he may have never really wanted to make the slaves American citizens, but realized he could score huge for the Republicans if he did.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Did anyone chose as yet, finding the "God Particle" as the most bad ass moment? I mean, the dude (not sure if he's American) found a particle that God uses to create matter and the moon and all other stuff you think is bad ass - now that's quite bad ass.

I love My Wii U, and the potential it brings to gaming.

fighter never responded to my post, and now I see others have cited the invention and detonation of a nuclear bomb as the most bad-ass event in American history? I'm absolutely speechless.

if it actually happened, then yes

You should refer to it as "putting a man on the moon", because "Moon Landing" could be mistaken for the first landing on the moon which was achieved by the Russians.

Anyway, putting a man (or twelve) on the moon still is a great achievement in human history.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

The near extinction of the Buffalo is pretty badass. Forcing an entire population to leave by killing off their source of existence.

After 1850, as the American-Indian war neared its climax, United States soldiers began to slaughter the animals indiscriminately to force the Indians to leave their homelands. With the advent of the railroad the killing of the bison became a sport. Travelers would shoot from railroad carriages, leaving the carcases to rot by the tracks. In less than 50 years about 50 million buffalo had been exterminated.

But if you're looking for something positive, then the moon landing it is.

^DAAAMMN!!!

However, I'd say the most badass moment is the creation of the federal reserve.

You fucking kidding me? It's the most bad ass thing in all of human history!!

I think landing on the Moon was the most badass event in human history. For hundreds of thousands of years, our species was confined to this little rock, unable to leave a single grain of sand to explore the beach. Held down by gravity, held back by our need for warmth, oxygen, sustenance that can only be aquired on Earth. "No," we said, "this little rock is not big enough for us. We are too badass to be repressed by gravity!"

The only events that compare in badassery are the Lunar Rover missions, when humans went all the way back to the Moon just to drive around on it. Badass.

I see I got ninj'd some 14 hours before my own post ^^ I'm surprised not everyone thinks this is the most bad ass event ever to occur since like the creation of life it self...
