Simple question.  How many units lifetime does Vita have to sell before you'd call it successful?

I'll go with 40m.  Half of what PSP did would be pretty darn good with a shrinking handheld market and the 3ds' current stranglehold on third party support in Japan (where handhelds sell best)

I voted the same as you, for a similar, but not Identical reason. Half the sales of Nintendo's poorest selling, 3 year lifespan handheld (The GBA) is pretty decent. Not sure if I would call it a success at this point, but no longer a failure.

The number of consoles sold won't alone define Vita as a success or failure. It's whether it earns money or not. Just like with GCN, it sold a handfull, but made profit for Nintendo. Vita has no chance to repeat PSP numbers, cause the market is different AND many people used to buy a PSP cause they could pirate games. They could just buy a console, a memory card and never spend a dime again. It increased the sales, but is this a success for the manufacturer? Don't think so. In my country many shops sell hacked PSPs, so you don't even have to do it on your own... Hope the stupid memory cards and other security will spare Vita this fate.
My opinion is that if Sony breaks even on the whole Vita project and earns a bit of cash, it will be good, a minor success.
A real success will be when:
A) pirates don't hack the console
B) the sales of 3rd party games will be high enough to encourage 3rd parties to move to the console, so that they won't be interested in releasing 3DS exclusive games

Cause when A) and B) happen, it will mean the console is earning cash. This can even be the case with 25-30 million pieces of hardware sold, though I'm counting for more.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

i'll go for 35m from here if its making them money

i feel for the 3DS if it's going to be judged by the DS

i know but i can already see the threads :)

call me old fashioned but if you are getting over 50/60m you are certainly not a flop, maybe benchmarks have changed now with all the 100m + machines

About 50-60M a lifetime sales. Just like PS3 Vita had a slow start. And I believe next year Sony will announcing Vita new model with stronger battery.

People have high standards thats the problem.
Anything over 15mil is good IMO (low but not a failure). Beside next gen is bound to fail in some peoples logic (has to sell more than its last console).
There's almost no way all these are going to happen
100mil Wii<WiiU
75mil+ PS3< PS4
75mil+ Xbox360< Xbox720
155mil DS< 3DS
75mil+ PSP< VITA

No way more than 3 of these are surpassing last gen! Even two seems like pushing it!

i say 50 million at the least.

Doubt it. If anything, next Vitas will be made cheaper and simpler. Just compare PS3: Fat > Slim > Super Slim. They need to compete with a much cheaper rival. Vita is a top quality powerhouse now and it's not selling. Increasing the quality just doesn't seem to be the right way for Vita. Plus I really think the battery is ok.

You hit the nail on the head with the point about Japanese third-party support.  In order for the system to be successful, it's home territory needs to show the love and be there with support.  Iwata has done a fanTAStic job of getting all the big third-party players on board to sort of force 3DS into being a dominant machine in Japan.  I don't necessarily agree that handhelds sell best in Japan.  DS sold better in North America, but we're talking a population of 350 million + versus less than 120.  Apples and oranges.

yeah I meant per capita.  The PSP sold more in Europe and America even though it was most successful in Japan
