The number of consoles sold won't alone define Vita as a success or failure. It's whether it earns money or not. Just like with GCN, it sold a handfull, but made profit for Nintendo. Vita has no chance to repeat PSP numbers, cause the market is different AND many people used to buy a PSP cause they could pirate games. They could just buy a console, a memory card and never spend a dime again. It increased the sales, but is this a success for the manufacturer? Don't think so. In my country many shops sell hacked PSPs, so you don't even have to do it on your own... Hope the stupid memory cards and other security will spare Vita this fate.
My opinion is that if Sony breaks even on the whole Vita project and earns a bit of cash, it will be good, a minor success.
A real success will be when:
A) pirates don't hack the console
B) the sales of 3rd party games will be high enough to encourage 3rd parties to move to the console, so that they won't be interested in releasing 3DS exclusive games
Cause when A) and B) happen, it will mean the console is earning cash. This can even be the case with 25-30 million pieces of hardware sold, though I'm counting for more.
Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!
My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/
My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
